Albert Johnson of White Mountain wins the first lap of the Three Day Dog Derby at Cape Nome in 1 hour 56 minutes 27 seconds. Fred Topkok of Igloo follows in 1 hour 58 minutes 04 seconds as crowds hear live reports from Front street and the start line on Bering Sea ice.
The Nome fair opened its Fair Building at 1 p.m. with public viewing of exhibits as racing teams return from Cape Nome. Last night the Eskimo Potlatch drew 300 locals and visitors for a roast reindeer feast and Eskimo dancing after a dinner at the Indian Affairs school. Tonight the fair continues with events at 8 p.m. and more exhibits to see.
The Spanish government reports pushes against General Franco on three fronts with successes in Guadalajara Cordoba and toward Burgos. Franco's militia gained ground near Bilbao while Bilbao airmen bombed Durango killing sixty people in the southeast.
Federal authorities dropped the case against Vern Charlton a 34 year old Seattle man held since last Saturday in connection with the kidnapping of Chas Mattson Jr. Charlton was told he could go but chose to stay for a shave and supper. Authorities hoped he would help unlock the kidnapper case.
