Rain today and tonight in Grafton and vicinity with a gradual taper Friday. Highs expected in the 60s to 70s and lows in the 50s. Rain may end by Friday as skies clear and temperatures rise into the weekend.
Grafton residents will vote November 2 on raising garbage fire and police fees by 50 cents monthly. Council agreed to a referendum under petitions opposing the increases, which were blocked pending the vote or repeal. The case includes injunctions and a lawsuit challenging the rate changes effective Sept. 1. Mayor Manley notes ballot costs and budget impact while other city business includes a dog ordinance and street paving bids.
DETROIT AP The United Auto Workers dig in for at least a two week strike against Ford Motor Co as talks remain recessed. President Leonard Woodcock calls Ford unresponsive amid 56 days of stalled negotiations with 170000 workers walking out at 11 59 p m Tuesday. Officials foresee the dispute likely stretching into October with no formal restart set until next week.
Rural West Virginia war over school consolidation flares as Pennsboro High pupils stay home protesting plans to merge with Harrisville High. Locals argue the move would close the local school. officials cite building safety and schedule changes as key issues in the dispute.
On Route 50 near Kingwood at 11:50 a.m. two accidents totaled late model cars. Madeleine Hartsell of Terra Alta drove a 1975 Ford Granada east. Monalisa Reid of Terra Alta drove a 1974 Datsun west. Reid slowed to pass, ran off road, returned and collided head on with Hartsell. Both injured and taken to Preston Memorial Hospital. A separate Route 50 crash involved Margie Flieringer Terra Alta in a 1974 Plymouth and Dennis Merlo of Pittsburgh in a 1975 Ford Torino at 11:50 a.m. Damages were 800 to Merlo and 500 to Fueringer with no injuries or citations.
