Taylor County Fair Opens With Parade Of Events

The 34th Taylor County Fair kicks off Monday in Grafton with Master of Ceremonies Tom Patrick. Rev. Harry Rowe will deliver the invocation followed by the Grafton High School Band. The Bearcat Band, directed by Norman Adlington, performs at 7 p.m. and entrance music includes Theme from Rock and other tunes. Calico Queen Contest sponsored by the Grafton Woman's Club features 28 sponsor letters, with proceeds benefiting Fairmont State for federally matched funds. Judges include Dr. Richard Shearer and Ruth Shearer. Evening ends with music by the Paul Caldwell Show and horse racing at 10 p.m. Tuesday brings a demolition derby, square dancing by Choo Choo Squares, and detailed derby car lineups including Bob Nestor's Chevy 88 and Jeff Cockran's Brown Trout. Wednesday sees horse judging, Sheep show, Baby Beef Show, and the coronation of the Mini Calico Queen, with proceeds funding fair improvements such as gravel for parking and paths. Crown Bearer will be David Shriver.

A Mountain Statesman survey of 23 residents finds two thirds praise the Taylor County Fair with demolition derby and horse related activities cited as favorites. Some residents criticize entry costs or lack of interest, while others celebrate bands exhibits and socializing at the event.

Meeting planned to support Dr. Tampoya in Grafton

A Saturday 7 p.m. gathering at Ruby Foley’s Church on Washington Street invites friends and supporters of Dr. P. C. Tampoya to elect officers and plan fund raising for a clinic. Tampoya was suspended from Grafton City Hospital in April but regained staff in July after a mandamus. He has practiced in Pomona, California, and hinted a return to Grafton later.
