Six and a half percent of Flemington Elementary students were absent on Friday while higher rates appeared across Taylor County schools. Grafton High and Middle Schools reported 13 and 11 percent absences respectively. Hospital officials considered visitor restrictions as influenza cases rise. Health officials note the flu is spreading and vaccines may not cover the local strains, urging rest, fluids, and medical advice to prevent complications.
CDC reports 875 influenza deaths in 121 cities for the week ending Feb 21, part of a 4,235 total this season. Officials caution against assuming a sustained major epidemic, noting unusual timing and ongoing but uneven activity across most states. The A Victoria strain underpins most outbreaks.
The West Virginia House approved its Finance Committee budget bill 79 to 12, preserving a $638.5 million general revenue plan for the next fiscal year. The session featured strong opposition from younger members led by freshmen Dels Walton Shepherd and James W. McNeely who called for cutting or redistributing pork barrel expenditures. Sixteen amendments were proposed and all defeated after lengthy debate.
A youth, Steve Lance, about 12, was hospitalized for burns after a fire in a wooded area behind Crislip Motor Lodge along Route 50 Friday evening. Another youth, Kenny Cox, was involved but reportedly not hospitalized. Grafton gospel trio Gospel Pathway will perform at Assembly of God Tabernacle on Luby Street Sunday at 7 30 p.m., also appearing on a Radiothon sponsored by Taylor County Emergency Squad. public invited.
GRAFTON national Women’s Missionary Council Day will be Feb 29 with theme I lift my lamp. At the Assembly of God on Luby Street services at 11 a.m. include a public morning and evening. After worship 100 balloons with scripture tracts will be released. Also in GRAFTON a Miss Nursing Home of West Virginia 1975 coronation is set for March 6 at Rest Haven Nursing Home. Public invited. Consumer help for seniors begins March 2 at 20 E Main St, 10 a.m. to noon, with local agencies providing information across six counties. In KWEILIN Nixon aide says he will not respond to criticism of his China trip. Ford’s remark on the New Hampshire primary cited.
