Grafton Middle School Principal Nelson Lantz announced the Taylor County spelling contest tonight at 7 p.m. is tentatively rescheduled for Feb 23 due to a flu outbreak among organizers. The event aimed to select a winner for the state spelling bee in Morgantown.
The Taylor County Sheriff's office answered numerous calls on Saturday. Charles Morgan of Lost Run was arrested on a peace warrant. Residents on Curb Ridge reported roaming ponies. David Boyce, 34, of West Washington Street, was arrested for driving under the influence. Sammy Summers Sr. of Cherry Run reported $890 of chains and saws stolen from his garage. Charles Costolo on County Club Road reported chrome and parking lights stolen from his Mercedes Bentz.
The GAO reports mail service is improving but still not as good as the old Post Office Department. Delays stem from misrouted mail by sorting machines which cut costs but miss about 7 percent of pieces. Comparing 1969 to today, first class delivery averaged 1.5 days then and 1.65 days now, with more mail delayed and widespread dissatisfaction cited in a 96 page congressional report.
Grafton enters its second year of HUD Community Development Grant funds totaling 656000 over five years. City Manager C Lowell Mason urges all residents to complete the survey by March 1 to shape funding priorities. Patricia Hearst returns to the witness stand as defense airs her captivity tale. A jury and Hearst visited the Daly City closet and a San Francisco apartment closet linked to her abduction. Defense said the two hour tour was to aid recollection and influence jurors while prosecutors offered limited comment.
