Fire destroys downtown Grafton YMCA building

Staff Reporter David Blair reports a three hour blaze demolished the Main Street YMCA in Grafton. The roof collapsed as firefighters controlled the flames about 9 p.m. The International Bazaar on the ground floor was damaged, two adjoining apartments were evacuated, and two firefighters, Roger Jewell and Van Clyde Peacoe, were treated at Grafton City Hospital and kept overnight for observation.

A truck driven by Harry Kidwell of Bruceton Mills slid into a tractor trailer driven by Robert R Griffin of Newville Pennsylvania on Route 26 near Varrey Point at 6 35 am Friday. No injuries or citations reported and damage estimates unavailable.

Welfare mother fights gas bill dispute in Grafton

Beverly Cain, a welfare recipient with four children, disputes a 268.18 late gas bill for a period in 1976 after cattle damaged a meter. Equitable Gas reserves service but may replace the meter. Beverly plans to file a complaint with the Public Service Commission. Welfare officials note emergency aid limits but offer help and a February March heating allowance.
