Tuesday’s exhibition pitted Es tancia businessmen against Stubs Regulars before a large crowd. Hibler, Van Stone, Kennedy, and Postmaster Meyer starred as the Regulars won 14 to 4 after a late surge by the businessmen. Fans hope for a rematch soon.
The M. E. Church Ladies Aid met at Mrs. L. D. Roberts’s home. They sewed in a log cabin quilt project and planned a cream and cake sale at Romero’s store next Saturday. Members included Mesdames Green Porter Windsor Peden Parrott Kuykendall Preston Hawkins Woods Rousseau and Miss Windsor Pence Green. A bilingual note states a Mass at 9 in the morning at Lueras with Father Julius Hartmann.
Washington reports the post office department has a $1,000,000 surplus for the current year ending June 30 and a $3,000,000 refund to the treasury. Postmaster General Hitchcock credits financial reforms and an improved accounting plan for unlocking funds and ensuring future revenues cover expenses.
Judge Howell finds George Pope not guilty in the territory versus Pope burro theft trial. Evidence shows Pope did not possess the burros belonging to Allan McGillivray, costs taxed to McGillivray. On Tuesday morning the Boys Brigade delivered cans to city officials and by noon the total reached fourteen thousand. Some boys diverted a wagon load from a dump south of town but the extra load was refused when discovered, and no more was accepted. The rest of the group continued deliveries by noon.
Elder J M Tuttle joined Miss Kate Smith and J E Braxton in marriage Tuesday night May 30 at Mrs Brumback home Alta Vista. Sheriff Meyer drove the couple to their home. later friends hosted an old-time charivari. The couple are well known in Estancia and receive best wishes for a long, happy life.
Gen Porfirio Diaz shows signs of improvement in Vera Cruz Mexico. His face swelling subsided and his eyes bright. He spoke in a whisper while dictating his resignation five days earlier. He plans to retire to Oaxaca to watch his country’s progress. Guards and consular officials visited, including U S consul general William Canada.
A Fourth of July meeting is called for tonight at Neal Jenson’s office. No large attendance is desired. Reports from committees named last Monday will be given. Boosters urged to attend. Time is 8 000 oclock sharp.
Reverend J R Carver left last night for eastern New Mexico to spend a fort night on church work.
