Harlowton brownfield cleanup fuels rural redevelopment
A coalition of local, state and nonprofit groups is cleaning up an 180 acre railyard in Harlowton once run by Milwaukee Railroad. The project aims to convert the brownfield into a recreation area with trails and fishing access on the Musselshell River, potentially drawing tourism and growth to the 950 resident town. Funding, including EPA and state grants totaling about $4 million over eight years, supports asbestos and petroleum removal as part of the Brownfields Cleanup Grant efforts under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
