The Senate voted to require states to raise welfare for the aged, blind and disabled by about the same dollar amount as the recent 20 percent Social Security increase. It aims to shield those on both programs from welfare cuts while avoiding double benefits for combined recipients.
Vice President Spiro T. Agnew targeted the South with a critique of George McGovern’s Vietnam War record while Sargent Shriver courted the industrial Midwest asserting a union voter backing Nixon would be voting against himself. Shriver also met briefly in Cincinnati with Ohio AFL-CIO chief Frank King who has remained cool to the McGovern Shriver ticket.
President Nixon ordered a nationwide Rent Watch after meetings with the Cost of Living Council to stop illegal rent increases for seniors amid a 20 cent Social Security boost. A 50,000-unit rent sweep will enforce rollbacks if needed and monitor landlords under government guidelines as part of broader price and welfare measures.
Three American pilots arrived in the United States after release from North Vietnamese camps and were held for initial medical observation. Their families and supporters emphasized concern for comrades still missing while officials defended the rapid U S measures and rehabilitation plans.
Nine FBI agents were present at the Manhattan bank when two men attempted a robbery. Both robbers presented bomb threats and demanded ten thousand dollars. Police and agents moved quickly and secured the scene as the suspects were captured.
In Simms Montana, a dispute over school attire reached a settlement Friday after a modified dress code was approved by the school board. The ruling followed a court challenge prompted by objections from parents to the prior policy and actions by superintendent Robert Madden.
Lawsuit over a school dress code ends with a temporary restraining order allowing students to return to class. The code now permits boys to wear longer hair and girls to wear culottes or pants suits with conditions. A joint motion seeks dismissal of the action.

Thomas C. Grigg of Bozeman died when his car crashed into a tree on a rural road near Potosi Hot Springs. The collision occurred about Thursday afternoon. Grigg, 40, was pronounced dead at the scene and the crash is under investigation. He was the son of Dr. E. R. Grigg of Bozeman. This marks Madison County’s eighth highway death of the year, contributing to Montana’s 1972 toll of 304 fatalities.
Los Angeles AP report cites Dr. Frank Rauscher Jr stating only 20 percent of Americans with cancer access top care and the rest should demand it. He notes the Pap test saves lives but 15,000 women die yearly, due to awareness gaps and uneven doctor education.

Atty. Gen. Robert Woodah says he has asked law enforcement in two western Montana counties to stop gambling after investigations found activity in several bars. He notes the constitution election shows support for legislative action but enforcement continues under current anti gambling laws.
