A bomb ripped through a crowded Belfast bar killing two people and wounding 14 as violence continued despite peace appeals. The Associated Press reports the attack occurred Wednesday night in Northern Ireland amid ongoing terrorist activity.
Clarke Wallace Winters, 67, of Port Coquitlam, BC, died when his car towing a trailer went out of control on U S 287 five miles north of Norris. His wife and two children were hospitalized with injuries, while the trailer remained on the road. The Madison County death toll for 1971 rose to two and the state fatality total to 254.
Nixon aides say a woman candidate is unlikely to be tapped for either Supreme Court seat as none with a conservative judicial record and strong credentials emerges. Sylvia Bacon and Beatrice Rosenberg were cited as the most serious female contenders, but neither met the justice profile sought.
J E Corette chief executive and board chairman of Montana Power testified that state and federal governments should increase welfare allotments if rate increases are granted. About 200 to 300 Butte High School students protested Wednesday over the dress code, demanding relaxation of rules and open lunch periods. Principal Forrest Wilson attributed the demonstration to outside influences, while student leaders urged council action and invited protesters to attend a Thursday meeting.
Anaconda Copper petitioned the Montana Board of Health to ease sulfur and sulfur oxide limits to align with EPA rules adopted in April.
