The Weather Bureau backs a warm spell in Montana with forecast highs 55 to 65 and low 35 to 45 for Thursday night. Wednesday brought milder conditions, with peaks of 63 in multiple towns and only Broadus recording measurable rain at .01 inch.
A 25 to 30 year old bandit with a pistol robbed the Park and Washington Streets service station at 3 15 pm, escaping with between 75 and 100 dollars. Employee Ed Dickey 20 said the man wore blue jeans and a western shirt, and fled on foot north behind the building. The incident was reported to authorities and continued on Page 2.
A Eureka teen died in a hit and run while walking on dark U S Highway with a companion. A Hamilton woman, Ruth Greenup, 41, was killed when her car veered off Montana Highway 38 near Skalkaho Pass. Lyle Cosby, 41, of Eureka, was questioned as investigators seek the driver. Coroner Hal Gompf set an inquest.
The Milwaukee Road filings allege Edward J. Smart of Montana hit a westbound freight near Gallatin Valley Bozeman on July 15 with a logs truck at the Highway 191 crossing. The derailment damaged the locomotive and first car. the railroad seeks 75000 dollars in damages.
The House replaced President Johnson’s DC home rule with a referendum plan. If voters approve, a charter commission would study government form for seven months and submit a charter to voters then Congress. Senate favors a mayor and council election next year, making final approval unlikely.
Hanoi radio warned American POWs in North Viet Nam could be tried as criminals under Communist law with possible death penalties. The broadcast cited Nuremberg precedent and said Geneva POW provisions would not be observed. It followed U.S. protests over executions of two captured men.
The Indian Defense Ministry said Pakistani units suffered grievous losses with 27 killed and 26 captured as clashes occurred near Kelnar Dasar and Chotan in Rajasthan Desert despite a cease-fire. India also charged Pakistan with 42 serious violations and alleged further northern incursions in Fazilka-Lahore areas.
Soviet Foreign Minister Andrei Gromyko and Secretary of State Dean Rusk met at the United Nations in New York to discuss disarmament and the India Pakistan conflict among other matters. Gromyko declined to state progress toward U.S.-Soviet relations and scheduled a second meeting for Friday night.
Conferees from the Senate and House approve a bill to end the 41 year old national origins quota within three years and shift to Western Hemisphere limits. Beginning July 1 1968 Western Hemisphere immigration capped at 120 000 yearly with 170 000 from outside the Hemisphere and no more than 20 000 per country. The plan increases total annual admissions to about 355 000. The measure marks a major shift away from the 1924 quota system long attacked as discriminatory.
Rescue teams braved threats of new eruptions at Mt Taal to land on a small island in Taal Lake south of Manila. They found no signs of life on the 3 by 5 mile island once home to more than 1,000 people. 145 bodies were recovered and many listed as missing as tremors may trigger landslides. President Johnson ordered US Volcano expert James Moore to assess aid options.
The forecast for Butte today and Friday shows partly cloudy skies with widely scattered afternoon showers. Highs around 60 and overnight lows near 30, reflecting weather conditions similar to last year’s temperatures of 59 and 44 in Butte.
The government reports August consumer prices fell two tenths of a percent led by food price drops. Potatoes and tomatoes fell 28 and 25 percent respectively, pulling overall costs lower for the first time since last August as pork and other items showed modest shifts.
Eugene C. Tidball of Helena resigns as executive director of the Montana Legislative Council to join Amaconda Co. legal department at Butte. He will stay for at least one month to finish research on council projects. Tidball, 35, is the council’s only director since its 1957 creation. The 12 member council will appoint his successor. He earned 13 500 for the current biennium and is an attorney with degrees in business and law. He is married with four children.
