President Johnson urged presidential hopefuls to reject fear hate and prejudice and pursue responsibility and honesty. He warned that some candidates were tempted to use hate code words and exploit anger at a dedication address for Thomas More College in Covington near Cincinnati.
Montana Tech report shows fall enrollment at 717 students, a 22 percent rise from last year and 17.7 percent above 1966. Freshman engineering grows to 362 with more co eds. junior and senior engineering classes rise sharply. total junior 99 and senior 58. graduate credits steady. President Dr E G Koch credits alumni boosters and community support.
President Johnson denounces exploiting fear and hate during 1968 turmoil while speaking at the ceremony establishing Thomas More College. He urges Americans to confront race and crime with unity and a renewed commitment to democratic ideals.
A fire at 205 E Aluminum in Butte hospitalized two of five children. Joseph LaForge eight and Steve LaForge six months were treated at Silver Bow General in good condition for smoke inhalation. Fire caused extensive damage. police investigate neglect allegations against the mother as four other children were moved to safety.
President Johnson praised private business for expanding its involvement in public problem solving and urged a larger future role. Speaking to 3,000 National Postmasters Convention delegates he praised public service entrants and described a partnership between private enterprise and government. He urged mutual understanding to heal the nation and build the country.
A Senate panel reports the USSR is building a new class of Polaris type submarines armed with nuclear missiles able to reach U S targets 1500 miles offshore. The sub force would be roving and hard to detect or defeat signaling a narrowing U S lead in strategic weapons.
Cuban Interior Ministry says a spy ring organized by the United States Central Intelligence Agency was broken up in Havana. Eighteen people, including five women, were arrested and turned over for trial to the Havana Revolutionary Tribunal. The ring allegedly provided data on armed strength, sugar crop, ship movements and oil to the United States. One ringleader, Manuel de los Santos Garcia Ramirez, operates from Miami.
Fourteen University of Montana students depart from Missoula to Thule Greenland for an eight week tour in Meredith Willson’s The Unsinkable Molly Brown. The USO AETA and Defense Dept sponsor the trip with selectees chosen from 800 applicants. Rosalie Bracco of Butte is in the cast.
Two small chapels along Interstate 90 near White Lake are deemed unconstitutional by the U S Bureau of Public Roads. Built by a Corsica Christian Reformed Church club, the $2000 each structures sit on highway right of way, and the bureau warns they cannot be permitted anywhere.
Negro leader Adam Clayton Powell will speak at the University of Montana in Missoula as part of a lecture series sponsored by Associated Students. UM officials Dr Earl C Lory and Andrew Cogswell say Powell’s visit enhances the educational experience for students.
Henry King Stanford of the University of Miami ordered the band to omit Dixie from opening game selections with Northwestern and banned Confederate symbols from public ceremonies. In a Hurricane letter he said Southern heritage guides him to avoid symbols tied to slavery and discrimination for minority groups.
Mike Maritz of 1528 Elm loses a left blue car door stolen Friday night from a vehicle parked behind his home. Cornelius Reedy of Sauk Centre reports 30 thermal jackets worth 450 dollars taken from his car after a vent window break at a Holiday Inn.
