Rioters Turn Bay Area Into Battleground

Five hundred National Guard troops moved into Hunters Point as riots raged for a second night. Rioters fired pistols, triggered false alarms to lure fire trucks, injuring at least five firemen, three rioters, and several police officers. Authorities tightened security after the flare up.

Montana Hospital Association backs nurse pay hike plan

The Montana Hospital Association adopted a resolution urging Montana hospitals to set a minimum monthly salary of 450 for general duty registered nurses starting January 1. Executive secretary William Leary said this is the first statewide minimum proposal, promising raises from 50 to 120 per month and higher hospital costs overall.

Homestake Road Closure Tightens Traffic Restrictions

Montana officials warn Homestake interstate road is not finished and unauthorized traffic will be fined. Marines Press Battle South of DMZ in Prairie Operations

American Marines and North Vietnamese regulars fought a pitched battle about 13 miles northwest of Dong Ha near the rock pile. Heavy fighting lasted over 24 hours with at least 50 enemy killed and Marine casualties reported despite light losses claimed by command.

Montana to Let Contracts for 7.1 Million in Two Months

The Montana Highway Commission plans about 43 miles of road work costing an estimated 7.1 million dollars to be let in the next two months. Projects include 26.2 miles on primary, 2.8 on urban, and 13.8 on secondary systems with bids opening Oct 25.

Fountain damaged in Butte park amid vandalism

City authorities reported a damaged fountain in the Joan F. Kennedy Park development area near St. Ann Church. The fountainhead was torn off and hurled aside, water left running, and workers began tearing up the concrete base to reach the piping. Repairs are expected to take about three days with two workers.

Inman case prompts slap at Montana National Guard

A state commission faulted the Montana National Guard for lax fiscal controls after a convicted embezzler, Marilyn Inman, handled warrants and financial matters. The report to Gov. Babcock cited two breakdowns: failure to follow internal controls and weak procedures when warrants are paid, noting $9,626 refunded to the state from forged warrants.

Viet Cong formalizes new peace terms amid U S withdrawal demand

The Viet Cong political chief released a new list of conditions seen as milder than prior demands for ending the Vietnam War. The National Liberation Front later insisted only U S withdrawal can end the war, with no reference to negotiations. Radio Hanoi quoted the VC warning of escalation by the United States.
