Thousands flee as Taal Volcano erupts, with hundreds feared dead and 1000s injured or missing. Authorities report 117 bodies recovered, while rescue teams abandon island reach plans due to heat and aftershocks. Evacuees move inland amid rising lava, smoke, and fear of fresh eruptions.
An unexplained dynamite blast killed two Steward Mine contract miners, Gerald Noeller and Joseph Huber, as they worked as partners. Coroner Aleksich said there were no witnesses and investigators found no probable cause. The deaths occurred about 4 20 PM, their bodies found by shift boss Ted Boyd. Both men were South Dakota natives and Korean War veterans. Huber left a wife, three children, and a home in Lead, while Noeller left a wife and two children. Two young harvest workers, a New York fugitive and an Oklahoma teen, were charged with first degree murder and kidnapping in the slaying of Donald Hammer, owner of a Lincoln pole yard. They face possible death penalties if convicted. Arraignment set for Oct. 11 in Helena as investigators outline the case.
Montana State Board of Public Welfare removed the $5,000 resource cap for Kerr-Mills medical aid, expanding eligibility to more seniors. The change, approved after debate with lawmakers, could reduce planned services as funds stretch to cover additional beneficiaries.

In Havana Fidel Castro pledged an open door policy inviting Cubans to leave for the Yankee paradise and said those with relatives in the United States could apply at the Ministry of the Interior starting Oct. 10. He announced plans to form a central committee and prepare for a socialist constitution at the end of the year, criticizing the United States for restricting exit after the 1962 missile crisis. The speech marked the fifth anniversary of the Committee for the Defense of the Revolution.
Three burglaries and two car thefts were under investigation Tuesday as a possible connected spree. Leipheimer Motors Safeway and Pasley Motors were hit, with a Ford Galaxie and an Oldsmobile taken. Loot included groceries dry goods cigarettes and fishing tackle.
Pakistan asks the United Nations to create a three-continent peace force for Kashmir to avert another catastrophe. Foreign Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto urged a UN General Assembly speech and warned Pakistan could quit the UN if a just settlement is not achieved. He said the force would include contingents from Africa Asia and Latin America to oversee a plebiscite under UN auspices.
Debbie moved into northwest Florida Tuesday night bringing gales and heavy rain. Hundreds evacuated coastal islands and low-lying areas from Louisiana to Panama City while many residents boarded windows and sandbagged buildings. The Weather Bureau warned of up to six foot tides and 10 inches of rain with flood risk through Wednesday as evacuees and stranded boats were reported along the Gulf and Atlantic coasts.

Mrs. Willard Nash of Redstone was elected president of the Montana Federation of Republican Women at the conclusion of the group's 26th biennial convention, which opened Sunday and concluded Tuesday. Nash described herself as a cowboy and homemaker with years of party activity at precinct, county and state levels.
