A coroner's jury ruled Keith D. Holmes killed John C. Smith, but Holmes died by self-inflicted gunshot earlier the same day. Holmes left a note asking not to fault his family, as the inquest into Smith's disappearance focused on bones found in a furnace.
Yugoslavia filed a note protesting the treatment of Yugoslav barge crews in the U S occupation zone of Austria and accused the U S information service in Belgrade of abuse. Ambassador Kosanovic warned of a harsh reply for Belgrade embassy staff as the State Department confirmed receipt of the note.
Secretary of War Robert Patterson said reporters will not be allowed to witness any executions from the Nürnberg trial after thorough review. In Anaconda on Georgetown Lake Peter Antonich the local resident drowned Tuesday night in a boating accident. His brothers Frank and Chris Antonich located and recovered the body about 20 yards from shore with grappling hooks shortly before 6 PM Saturday aided by Ray Denton and a neighbor. The body was found entangled in weeds about 260 feet offshore from the pump station.
Ray A. Lathom of Billings was elected president of the Montana Society of Certified Public Accountants at the closing session of the annual convention in Butte. William F. Seel of Havre previously held the post.
Milwaukee report says Joe Lochner a former Marine had a five inch dinner fork lodged across his stomach with U S N initials on the handle. He suffered abdominal pains since 1943 after a Navy dinner and weight loss from 187 to 93 pounds before doctors discovered the fork in a Veterans Hospital X-ray.
Clear Sunday morning in Butte with increasing cloudiness by afternoon and evening. Slight warming expected with a next 24 hour maximum near 60. School of Mines reports 59/24, airport 61/22.
At the peace conference Yugoslavia refused to sign the Italian treaty or withdraw troops, opposing the Trieste frontier plan. An American proposal would deny reparations to Yugoslavia if it persists, voted 11 to 8 amid Greek abstention. Connally warned Yugoslavia would sign after consideration while Soviet and Yugoslav delegates criticized the move as coercive.
Merced California reports a ragged baby blanket and dustlike human remains found in a rusted oil drum at a dump 18 miles west of Merced after Harold Dresser 26 led deputies to the site. Coroner J. C. Brooks identified the remains as human. Dresser, linked to the 1944 killing of his 17 month old daughter, was arrested in Phoenix with his wife charged as an accessory.
Sen. E. V. Robertson of Wyoming asserts price controls on meat would cost the national administration the November election. He accuses Democratic leaders of disregarding the people’s desires and welfare.
John L. Lewis head of the United Mine Workers had an appendix removed in an emergency operation Friday and is reported in splendid condition by his physician Dr. John H. Lyons on Saturday night.
