A jury of eight Black and four white jurors acquitted Eugene Thomas, a Ku Klux Klan member from Bessemer, Ala., of murder in the 1965 slaying of white civil rights worker Viola Liuzzo near Montgomery after a brief deliberation of one hour and 25 minutes. The defense highlighted alibi testimony while prosecutors failed to present FBI undercover agent Gary Rowe Jr. in state court.
