President Roosevelt, addressing the New York Herald Tribune sponsored event, says Americans have both feet on the ground and condemn rumor mongers. He notes declining poll parrots, urges people to verify sources, and cites a Wall Street rumor about cabinet resignations.
The Federal Advisory Council told the Federal Reserve Board that a return to gold standard is needed before real recovery. It warned currency with fluctuating value harms business, urged a balanced budget, and said government money should stop competing with private capital. It also cautioned that rising debt threatens public credit and that current credit is ample for expansion.
Cabinet members of the Montana state conference of Methodist Episcopal churches will hold their annual meeting at the Y. M. C. A. this afternoon. New York dispatch says Bruno Hauptmann, indicted for receiving 50000 dollars in Lindbergh ransom, will be taken to New Jersey for trial as the murder of the infant son is pursued. Detectives probe Hauptmann garage site as Col Lindbergh and officials meet to discuss extradition and the case widens to suggest more than one participant.
Clarence Darrow said Hauptmann could only be saved by a sensational alibi tightly corroborated enough to provoke a national reaction. The veteran lawyer, now retired, remarked he is not current on the case but remains a potential fighting attorney if invited.
