Ernest E. Peterson, originator of the Peterson International code, raises his code words from 90 000 to 200 000 on October 1. A Brussels conference rule allows any ten letter strings with three vowels to pass as one word, replacing the old five letter word pair restrictions for cable transmissions. Peterson began as a Swift & Company stenographer at 13 and built private codes for firms before creating the international system now used by banks worldwide.

A Miami Herald dispatch from Nassau reports twenty deaths and widespread destruction from the hurricane. Water systems stay intact but many buildings are damaged or unroofed, with telephones out and sea walls breached. Grantstown suffered severe losses. shops and churches are wrecked. hotels largely escape major damage. Communication with the outside world is severed. A separate note says Miami and nearby areas were hit by a 58 mile per hour squall.

Peacox found guilty of wife murder in White Plains
Earl Peacox a 21 year old radio instructor was convicted of murder in the second degree for killing his wife on their first wedding anniversary. The verdict carries a prison term from 20 years to life after a six hour jury deliberation. He admitted striking her with a pistol and choking her then hiding the body and later burning it.

Butte Woman Finds 22000 Buried in Basement Treasure
A Butte woman uncovers cash buried in a cellar tomb of cans believed to be part of the estate of Thomas Foran. The finds amount to about 22000 in cash, stored in a basement and added to the debtor’s estate after a petition to extend creditors claims was filed.
