Pope Paul VI celebrated his 68th birthday under heavy rain as gypsies from across Europe gathered for their first international pilgrimage to Rome. Violent storms forced the Mass to move from a woodland glade to the steps of a seminary, where the pontiff joined the crowd in song and clapping as a gypsy band performed.
Gov. Tim Babcock will speak at 6 30 tonight at the Finlen Hotel to more than 250 members and guests at the Montana Federation of Republican Women's Club three day convention in Butte. The 26th biennial session opened with a candle light service reception and dinner honoring six national officers. Mrs Dorothy Elston of Middleton Del will address the group at luncheon today and has served on the national board since 1954 and on the executive committee since 1956. Workshops focus on program planning membership public relations and campaign activities with leaders from several states.

M. Scott Carpenter and nine aquanauts surfaced from Sealab 2 after 29 days 14 hours underwater marking the longest stay to date in naval underwater living tests. A third team will finish the 45 day experiment as presidents Johnson praised the work.
Three people died in Montana traffic incidents Sunday raising the state toll to 201, surpassing last year’s pace. Victims include James Roberts of Billings, Charley Day of Great Falls, and Francis Peterson of Missoula. Roberts’ crash occurred on Blue Creek Road while being chased by police. Day died in a Highwood Road crash involving Sidney Malar. Peterson died from injuries after being struck on a Missoula street.
Viet Cong radio reports two American captives were executed by firing squad in a reprisal for South Vietnam’s execution of three Communist sympathizers. Identifications included Capt. Humbert R. Versace and Sgt. Kenneth M. Roraback, with U.S. officials not confirming names due to broadcasting errors.
U S 1st Division troops ended a four day advance into D Zone north of Saigon with Col Y Y Phillips calling it important and successful. Viet Cong losses were noted as enemy dead seen in Phu Cu pass area, while U S forces and allied units continued operations around Qui Nhon and Vung My peninsula with limited contact.
