The event began Thursday and was to end Saturday but will extend to Monday and possibly Tuesday due to generous public support and donations of items. Mia Otto Pishar and Mrs Thomas Cartig announced the extension on Friday night.
A Butte motorist was fined $10 and barred from city driving for two days after Judge John Seton found Joseph Hasse guilty of reckless driving. The incident occurred when Hasse failed to see Henry Godman’s eastbound truck at Front Street, causing Godman to overturn his vehicle and injure his right elbow. Also in court Willard Cleveland received two hours to leave the city on a vagrancy plea. Robert Gainsberry was sentenced to 60 days in county jail on vagrancy charges, and a $100 bond was forfeited for Em Krainer on drunken driving. A separate traffic rule violation forfeiture of four bonds was ordered. Moisture guidelines for storing hay advised 12 to 14 percent moisture for hay, and 22 percent for chopped and baled hay.
Mary Fleming, longtime Butte resident, died Friday at home after prolonged illness. She hosted many locals at 444 West Broadway and was active in St. Patrick Parish and allied groups. Survived by daughters Mary Coyle and Mrs. James Sullivan, son-in-law Jack Fleming, sister Kate Smith, nephews and several grandchildren. funeral Monday at an announced time.
Judge Stanley Fett of Billings Republican candidate for attorney general spent Friday in Butte campaigning. A World War I veteran, he has lived in Montana 38 years and served as attorney, county attorney, and district judge. He plans another campaign visit later.
Dr Francs A Thomson president of Montana School of Mines will preside over the initial faculty meeting for the term at 12 o clock Saturday morning in the Library Museum building. The president announced the addition of Judson G Ruggles as instructor in chemistry replacing Donald Paulsen who resigned. Ruggles a 1942 Oregon State College graduate taught at USC last year and is pursuing a master's degree. He has served as chemist for Oregon state department of agriculture and chief chemist for an industrial firm. Registration for upperclassmen at Mines begins 4 o clock Monday morning with classes starting Tuesday. Freshmen underwent placement exams Friday.
James Riley was elected president for the coming year at a meeting of the St Patrick Altat/Boye society. Other officers chosen were Jack Noonan as vice president, Alwart Boyle as secretary, Donald Sullivan as treasurer, and Jerry Grant as master of ceremonies.
William Holland of Great Falls tells how brakes failed on a one and a half ton hauler on a Spring Hill grade west of Anaconda. He felt the truck lurch, fought it for a quarter mile, and was dragged under as the vehicle crashed down a hillside. His pelvis was crushed and he suffered multiple injuries. he was moved to Murty hospital in Butte for treatment.
Officials report a persistent shortage of qualified office workers with demand rising to record levels. Training programs for secretarial and accounting skills, typing, shorthand, and business machines are expanding to address gaps.
Proceeds from the sale support financing for the Butte high school band's June trip to Portland. The band has earned outstanding tribute for its appearance in the Tournament of Roses. The committee is led by co chairmen carrying out the fundraising effort.
