Republican nominee Wendell L. Willkie drew a colossal turnout in Butte as thousands lined streets and packed the high school stadium for a rousing westward greeting. A motorcade escorted Willkie through Broadway and Montana streets, while the city band and high school corps added ceremonial flair.
Wendell Willkie toured Butte Montana drawing an estimated forty thousand spectators with more than twenty five thousand in the stadium and thousands along the parade route. He criticized centralized federal power and linked Roosevelt’s 1937 copper price remark to wage cuts in Butte’s copper industry. The mayor hailed the massive turnout and Willkie as the next president.
Two Irishmen named Gallagher on the Willkie campaign train between Missoula and Butte discovered their homes in Ireland are within 20 miles of each other. Charles H. Gallagher of Butte, chairman of Willkie visit arrangements, and Harold Gallagher, Willkie party manager, learned Bal l ina and Castlebar in County Mayo are their roots. They plan to investigate a possible relation after sharing memories of Ireland.
Berlin dispatch reports German sources say the Axis will continue fighting on all fronts. Diplomatically and politically Egypt Greece Turkey and possibly Yugoslavia may be targeted while efforts to split English public opinion intensify. Mussolini and Von Ribbentrop reportedly included the US in their plans and decide to fight without compromise.
Vice President John Vance Garner ends a three month stay at his South Texas home and departs by train for Washington to resume official duties.
McCall Idaho Sept 24 A gun battle with state police ended in the death of a 17 year old boy bandit Kenneth Bagley Spokane Wash and left his companion Martin Gemmerig 16 also of Spokane seriously wounded after officers opened fire in retaliation for shots fired.
British and German warplanes traded blows over capitals as London endured an eighteenth straight raid. RAF air raids forced Berliners underground while British warships shelled Dakar, Senegal, in a widening conflict that included French forces fighting fellow French and allies clashing with each other in Africa and Europe.
National Reclamation association delegates, about 700 strong, gathered at the Great Falls civic center for a session on making America strong. O. B. Warden opened with notes on 10 million Westerners saved by reclamation and potential room for 10 million more by utilizing water in advised ways. FP. O. Hagie cited conditions in the Great Plains and Dust Bowl areas and urged applying proven Western reclamation methods as drought tightens western states.
In Tulsa a 53 year old woman asks an attorney how to handle a family riddle about ages. She claims she and her husband shaved years off her son’s birth date to affect his draft status. The attorney urges a family truth session to resolve the discrepancy and avoid legal trouble.
Wendell Willkie visited Missoula on his Western campaign train tour and spoke to about five thousand listeners at the Garden City. He urged job creation through freer business and fielded questions with humor, quipping about Mrs Willkie and his image as an aristocrat versus Roosevelt.
Montana editors and guests heard Wendell L Willkie speak informally at the Finlen hotel banquet room. The event, sponsored by the Butte Press club, featured an off the record address with humorous anecdotes and decisive views on national affairs. An honorary life membership and a mine metal elephant symbol were presented.
Forecast calls for fair weather today and Thursday with little temperature change. Montana expected to remain generally fair with warmer conditions east of the divide today and in the extreme eastern portion Thursday.
