Beating back a Nazi assault, French troops halted the offensive as World War II actions unfold. Montana reports spending 4.5 million dollars on highways in the first nine months of 1939. Warsaw radio fell silent as German broadcasts claimed the city was surrounded and in desperate straits.
President Roosevelt refused to comment on Alf Landon’s proposal urging him to declare he does not want a third term. Prof. Sigmund Freud famed originator of psychoanalysis died at his Hampstead London residence shortly before midnight. He was 83 and had come from Vienna to England after Austria’s German annexation. Funds raised in the United States helped his move. He had been ill for months and lapsed into coma yesterday without regaining consciousness.
Six year old Maxine Yarrington, nicknamed the Sleeping Beauty of St. Francis hospital, has spent four years in a bed in the children's ward after encephalitis lethargica. Her condition remains largely unchanged with subnormal development and periods of unresponsive staring. Doctors have given up hope for recovery and warn she could live for years or die at any time.
J L Sherburne of Browning was named president of the Yellowstone Glacier Bee Line Highway association at the road boosters meeting in Livingston. Paul Working of Wilsall and Howard Hayes of Glacier Park were elected vice presidents, with L E Flint of Livingston as secretary treasurer. Henry Paynter reports that England and France have not boosted orders for legally permissible essential war supplies in the United States since the war began. Despite vast cash and credit, purchases remain subdued, possibly to avoid isolationist backlash amid congressional debates on selling munitions and mobilization. Allied demand for machinery and raw materials remains notable, while munitions imports stayed flat after neutrality was proclaimed.
Opponents of the administrations neutrality program sought a deal with Senate leadership to limit speechmaking and avoid night sessions in exchange for four to five days to present their case after the foreign relations committee reports the bill. A vote within a month was forecast if an accord could be reached.

Soviet Russian and Hungarian troops formed formal contact high in the Carpathian mountains near Munkacs Hungary. The Red Army flag and Hungarian banners flew together as German units reportedly withdrew from Beskid and Uzsok passes to allow a new frontier division, while 8,900 Polish soldiers crossed the line before Soviet officers appeared.
Montana outlook shows generally fair conditions for Sunday and Monday with cooler temperatures in the western and central regions. The extreme eastern section will experience cooler air on Monday.
Moscow reports all Soviet troops mobilized since September 7 will remain under arms indefinitely due to external conditions. The move follows rapid mop up in the three-fifths of Poland allotted to Moscow by the German pact and maps showing the Polish buffer state idea dropped for now.
Children playing with matches started a blaze that destroyed a garage at Mrs. Anna Perusich's home at 2746 Argyle Street and a shed on Joseph Malensek's adjacent lot. Neighbors formed a bucket brigade to save the Perusich residence as flames scorched the dwelling exterior. The fire exceeded the local protection boundary. Mrs. Perusich is a widow.
Butte marks Gold Star Mothers Day with flag flying at federal building and a call for all public buildings and residents to display the American flag. The day honors eight Butte women whose sons died in World War I. a dinner and entertainment are planned later by the American Legion auxiliary.
Autumn arrives in Butte as the high hits 74 and a low of 38. Foresters report Deer Lodge forest ranges generally in good shape with ample forage for winter wildlife, though fuels are fairly dry due to limited rainfall.
