The Soviet Union safely recovered the unmanned Zond 5 capsule after it circled the moon and splashed down in the Indian Ocean south of Africa. Officials said scientists gained a vast amount of information from the instruments and film aboard the craft.
Sir Bernard Lovell of Jodrell Bank Observatory says the Russians lead the United States in the race to the moon after the Zond 5 flight. He expects a human to reach the moon within months and return, indicating Russia may see the moon before Americans.
Soviet Union achieved a circumlunar flight prompting renewed calls by Apollo engineers in Houston for a crewed moon orbit as early as December. The plan envisions three astronauts circling the Moon at about 70 miles, photographing landing sites, and testing lunar gravity effects before any landing attempt. Apollo 8 could either loop or orbit the Moon depending on tests from Apollo 7.
Richard Nixon and GOP strategists favor a relaxed campaign, praising crowds in the United States and emphasizing television appearances. He ignores fifth candidate George Wallace while privately worrying he could affect the electoral vote outcome. Latimer’s eastbound vehicle veered off I 90 at City Center exit near Butte after being struck by an unidentified car, then hit a utility pole. A second incident near Harrison and 2700 addresses injured Steven Galasso, 20, Nine Mile, and Rayleen O Keefe, 18, Butte. O Keefe hospitalized for an eye injury, Galasso not hospitalized, and Malyevac uninjured. All occupants reportedly wore no seat belts. Nearby Wise River man Gary Atkinson sustained injuries after a southbound car rolled into a borrow pit near Divide. Neighbors treated him. car ownership traced to prior owner. Disneyland Paris celebrates Mickey Mouse’s 40th birthday with a parade drawing crowds.
The forecast calls for partly cloudy skies and warmer conditions today and Tuesday. Highs near 56 with lows around 28, and a 10 percent chance of showers tonight. One year ago temperatures were 75 and 32.
Milwaukee MSgr. James E Kelly, 73, rector of St John’s Roman Catholic Cathedral, was floored during an antiwar demonstration by about 40 people. He was uninjured after a bearded youth pushed him as protesters approached the pulpit asking to read a statement urging the church to resist war and racism.
Two Vida area farmers Leonard Suppes and Vaughn were killed when a pickup struck them as they walked east of Wolf Point. The abandoned vehicle was found at the scene as authorities searched for the driver. The Montana highway death toll rose to 205 for the year.
Two Avianca airliners carrying 135 aboard were hijacked from Barranquilla and diverted to Cuba. A 727 with 72 passengers landed in Camaguey, a DC4 with 57 passengers arrived in Santiago de Cuba. No injuries reported and hijacker claimed political motive.
