World War II veteran Huber Barnes dies in Minneapolis hospital
Huber Barnes age 44 of Helena a Helena High School graduate 1935 and WWII veteran dies of heart ailment after a long illness. He served in the Army from 1943 then returned to Helena and worked as a draftsman for the state highway department. He is survived by his wife Katherine Martin and two daughters Janette and Barbara plus parents brothers and extended relatives. The body is sent to Herrmann and Co Funeral Home for services and burial.

Helena Junior High vault break in foiled by quick action
Burglars armed with a pick adze hacksaw wrench and pinch bar attempted to force entry into the Helena Junior High School vault during the night. Assistant principal James Weir found the scene at 1 PM Sunday. They shattered panes attacked the vault damaging the combination dial and handle before fleeing, leaving tools and wreckage.

Request for Wood Taken Literally Two Men Are Beaten
Two transients in Helena reported that a jungle fire companion attacked them with a two by four after they asked for more wood. The incident occurred around 4 a.m. in the Northern Pacific yard as they warmed themselves, leaving one man with 21 stitches. Both sought medical aid and police, with a broadcast leading to two men being taken into custody in Missoula and held for Helena police.

Harry R. Athey 78 retired smelterman and Spanish War veteran died Sunday noon at Veterans Administration Hospital Fort Harrison after a period of illness. Funeral Tuesday 10:30 a.m. at Retz Chapel, cremation at Hillcrest Lawn Memorial Great Falls. He served in the Philippines and Manila defense, married Florence Kenck Hurd in Helena, survived by sister Lulu B. Athey and cousins. He was a member of several veterans and civic organizations.

Eight Navy crew survive Nevada crash in Desatoya Range
A twin engine Navy P2V Neptune crashed into the Desatoya Range near Fallon Nevada while searching for a missing jet. One of nine crew was killed. Eight survivors, four with minor injuries, were flown to Fallon base by helicopter. Lt. Richard Lee Clement of Atlanta, Ga piloted the missing Banshee.

Dangerous Pair Captured After Pueblo Hospital Escape
Two of four men described as dangerous who fled the State Hospital in Pueblo on September 3 were captured in a Denver apartment house after a fight with two detectives.
