Chinese and Japanese air actions over Canton mark the worst raid since the war began. Nine bombers and pursuing fighters struck at dawn, setting hundreds of homes ablaze while Cantonese panicked as Chinese fliers contested the air.
A federal probe into a five million dollar job program begins with a focus on postal registration of work and part time employment. Officials say the project plans to be completed before December 1.
President Roosevelt backs a plan to register jobless and part time workers by December 1 in a nationwide effort. John D. Biggers to direct the $5 million operation, distributing 31,000,000 forms through the Post Office Department and issuing a simple, noncompulsory registration with a radio address to follow.
Eight fuel oil tanks exploded at regular intervals and a large oil warehouse burned at the Standard Oil main plant in San Francisco. The fire began about 8 30 p.m. and firefighters said it was beyond control after an hour and a half. Witness William O Keefe, 20, said gasoline loading triggered the blaze and the blast sent oil spraying into the street. Firefighters battled to stop flames reaching the Richfield Oil line tanks across the street.
Shanghai dispatch reports major Japanese military pressure across a 2000 mile line in China with 100000 troops engaged. Nanking bombed by 50 plus naval aircraft. U.S., Britain and France protest aerial attacks while Germany signals limited disapproval. James Cummins, 53, veteran Butte editor, dies after appendicitis attack at St James hospital.
Japan conducted two air raids on Nanking with over 50 planes, killing or wounding more than 200 Chinese civilians in the poorer quarters along the Yangtze river front. Incendiaries set straw huts aflame as cries rose for aid amid protests by the United States Britain France and Germany. Ambassador Nelson T. Johnson and staff returned to the embassy after the attacks.
President Roosevelt began a two week cross country tour aboard the Roosevelt train en route to Seattle to gauge public sentiment on his program. He will stop at eight states talk informally to crowds and assess support for his economic measures and court reform. He will inspect major dam projects Bonneville Grand Coulee Fort Peck and Owyhee.
Former Butte boxer turned Renova rancher Joe Simonich shot a 300 pound bear that had been killing sheep beehives and calves. The intruder entered a barn before the hunt ended, according to local friends.
Bozeman reporter Sam Smiley says a 317 acre field of turkey red wheat near Bozeman yielded an average of 113 bushels per acre with 14 percent protein. Montana State College tests with turkey red wheat showed top averages around 66.7 bushels per acre.
Violin expert Albert Maglie said a 76 year old Indian’s trip to Washington was likely in vain as Louis Coutre of the Flathead Indian tribe believed the instrument from Polson Montana was a Stradivarius but it is probably a German copy among many.
Cloudy skies across Montana with showers in the eastern region and cooler temperatures in the east and north on Thursday. Friday looks generally fair with improved conditions overall.
Details were given at Immaculate Conception church last night for Sunday’s Holy Name rally in Butte, expected to be one of Montana’s great religious demonstrations. Measured precipitation stood at .16 inches as temperatures fell from 55 to 40 degrees. Meaderville faced cloudburst risk Tuesday night though ditch work kept homes safe as surplus water moved away.
Montana is set to receive a large portion of about 7 million dollars allocated to improve the national airways system. If funds remain after upgrades, 11 new routes may be added, including a 400 mile Billings to Cheyenne link costing 320 thousand dollars. Projects include radio range and telephone stations, teletype circuits, and antenna units at several western locations.
R A Jones of Anaconda Montana and his daughter Catherine were critically injured when their car overturned three miles north of Dubois Idaho. Jones suffered scalp lacerations a broken arm and possible internal injuries while Catherine Jones sustained severe cuts and bruises. They were hospitalized after being transported by Sheriff Harry Rayner and local men. Jones worked as sales manager of the phosphate department for Anaconda company.
Catholic high school students from eight Helena diocese schools begin arriving for a two day Student Catholic Action conference. About 1,500 students will attend sessions Friday and Saturday with Most Rev Bernard J Shiel as sermonist and speaker. registration for Butte students set for 2 to 4 PM at the K of C hall. Luncheons planned for 12:15 PM tomorrow.
