AP dispatch reports rising U.S. combat deaths and wounded in Vietnam for the year to date, with 6,701 killed and 45,705 wounded through last Saturday. Total American combat deaths since 1961 now 13,365 with 83,443 wounded, plus 2,469 nonhostile deaths.
Gov Tim Babcock told reporters that state revenue needs justify a sales tax if required and that disputes with Lt Gov Ted James are minor. He outlined possible moves including gross revenue taxes on out of state firms and noted Glasgow Air Force Base phaseout could trigger defense changes. He cited eastern Montana coal as a future boom and hinted Nike X considerations for Glasgow.
Police in Pennsylvania and Ohio tightened patrols after eight new shootings and rock throwing tied to an eight-state strike by independent steel haulers. Trucking firms hired armed guards and convoys rolled. Some drivers carried weapons, including a shotgun used after rods were thrown at a truck near Somerset. no charges or injuries were reported.
Helena Anaconda Co representative attorney R Lewis Brown pledged to take interim and long term steps to stop pollution of the Clark Fork River and to seek changes to an Aug 11 order requiring relief of pollution and new facilities. The comments came amid a tangle of government and court actions since copper wastes began in July.
Secretary of State Dean Rusk prepared to resign if his daughter’s interracial marriage embarrassed the Johnson administration politically. President Johnson treated the offer as a courtesy and gave it no serious consideration. Resignations are traditional when officials fear developments may embarrass the administration.
The Montana Criminal Law Commission continues efforts to modernize code provisions. Many sections from 1885 to 1895 remain unenforced and clutter law books. Chairman Wes Castle explains the goal is elimination and modernization with future plans.
Butte transit men accuse Butte Bus Lines Inc of running school buses as city transit vehicles in violation of state law. A letter to School District No. 1 trustees signed by Arthur A. Kalarchik and Glen W. Lince alleges lack of Montana Railroad Commission authorization for Olsen’s city bus operation. The dispute centers on transporting students within three miles and funding returns from state and county reimbursements.
AP report shows Police Judge Donald Bjertness accusing Mayor Fraser of trespassing on his territory by dismissing 760 parking tickets since June 1966, excluding conventioners. He alleges some dismissed tickets were on Fraser’s own car while Fraser defends obeying laws and setting an example. Clergy allegedly mailed Fraser tickets for dismissal.
A Darby man and an 18 year old Great Falls youth were killed in separate accidents Thursday. Melvin Jensen 25 died in a motorcycle car collision on a dirt road near Darby after 51 feet of skid marks. Samuel Bacon 18 died when his car hit a tree in Great Falls and was found later. he may have been ejected 149 feet.

New York Times reports Dr. John L. Schimel of the William Alanson White Institute says nagging wives push husbands toward adulterous affairs. He notes wives threaten to leave but asserts adultery rarely destroys marriages and describes dependency driven behavior in both wives and mistresses.
Three newborn babies believed dead over 40 years were found mummified in a Washington Heights apartment storage trunk. Autopsy by Milton Helpern could not determine birth status or cause of death due to advanced mummification. The mother reportedly concealed the bodies after secret birth in 1920s.
Margaret Elizabeth Rusk, 18, wed Guy Gibson Smith, 22, a Negro, at Stanford University Chapel. Smith, a Georgetown graduate and Air Force Reserve lieutenant, awaits helicopter training and Vietnam duty. About 50 attended. security tight as guests were invited guests only.
