Fires Ravaging California Area Threaten Calistoga and Napa

Forest fires raged through Calistoga and neighboring Napa Valley as 10 fires burned across the region. The Porcupine Hill blaze jumped a road near Healdsburg, destroying an auto and forcing evacuations while smoke drifted 70 miles south toward the San Francisco Bay Area. Deputy Sheriff Al Lindhome and others saved five homes as winds reached 70 miles per hour.

Trustees Sell Two Old School Buildings in Fish Creek

Trustees of School District No. 1 sold the Upper and Lower Fish Creek structures to local residents for bids of $200.99 and $210, removed insurance coverage, and created two supervisory principalships to address district needs. Mrs. Susan Shannon was hired as a third grade teacher at Webster-Garfield with a $5,450 salary.

Washington AP reports a tentative four point settlement ending a potential national rail strike. Railroads and six shop craft unions agree on subcontracting supervision coupling and outlying points with arbitration if needed. Johnson kept informed but did not publicly intervene. Johnson seeks widespread campaign swing despite caution

President Johnson rejected overconfidence and outlined plans to visit more than 30 states before the election. He told reporters he will travel across the country to present his viewpoints on public questions and stand on issues. He also dismissed a Soviet agency report that U S destroyers sank three vessels in the Gulf of Tonkin, saying the ships fired only to defend themselves as needed.

A Monday interstate crash east of Missoula raised Montana toll to 191 for the year. Victims include George Sams Jr. 19 Auburn Wash Roberto Quintana 29 Livingston Mrs Carolyn Wink 32 Livingston. A dog on the truck died and a Livingston barber Gene Wink suffered critical injuries.

Copper prices rise as Anaconda and Phelps Dodge lift two cents

New York AP UPI reports domestic copper prices jumped two cents a pound to 34 cents, led by Phelps Dodge then Anaconda. Kennecott offered no comment as Anaconda followed hours later, with officials signaling a sustained price rise despite a positive longer term supply view.

Four Men Trapped In Yucca Flat Shaft Rescue Efforts Continue

Rescue crews labored under electric lights to free four men trapped since Saturday 1800 feet underground at Yucca Flat. Officials feared delays as 1400 feet of thick electrical cable clogged the shaft while AEC workers contemplated a future underground blast. Butte Man Escapes When Auto Plunges Into River

Martin Drivdahl, 23, of Butte, crawled from a submerged car after it skidded 140 feet and plunged into the Big Hole River. The vehicle struck a bridge, overturned, and was wrecked. Don Peterson and Miles Tuttle aided in recovery as residents note frequent wrecks on the Divide road despite a locally posted 25 mph sign.
