German warnings against efforts to organize resistance in occupied France rise as air battles intensify. Allied and German air forces clash over the English Channel and southern England, with losses reported on both sides.
German air strength builds in the west to counter RAF raids on northern France as German dive bombers attack the southeast coast. RAF claims 24 German planes destroyed while 13 British fighters fall. RAF bombers hit Gosnay power station near Bethune and Lille rail facilities.
Berlin reported for the first time that a week of submarine raids claimed 28 merchant ships sunk in Icelandic waters. The German recapitulation states total tonnage lost at 250 300 tons, with 28 ships and three warships sunk between Sept 13 and 20.
A Ankara dispatch reports Germany asked Bulgaria to supply 200000 troops to police France freeing German soldiers for the Russian front. In Hollywood a brief nightclub scuffle between actor Errol Flynn and writer Jimmie Fidler ended when the Star Spangled Banner began. A fork caused a minor ear gouge to Flynn, with Mrs. Fidler allegedly involved. Both men gave conflicting accounts while Robbie Fidler claimed no fork was used.
London reports say Bulgaria, under German orders, mobilized 17 divisions on the Turkish frontier as part of a broader plan possibly linked to an attack on Turkey. Diplomats note Britain could intervene in the Middle East if Bulgaria moves toward Thrace and the Bosporus, while Hitler weighs manpower limits and a push toward the Caucasus.
A tropical hurricane sweeping from the Gulf of Mexico prompted the dispersal of 400 Army planes to safer areas in south Louisiana. Coastal residents were urged by the coast guard to seek inland shelter as warnings extended from Pasagoula Mississippi to Morgan City Louisiana and to Carrabelle Florida. The storm was centered about noon 280 miles south of Port Eads and moving northwest toward Louisiana and Texas coasts at six to ten miles an hour.
Chicago report states George Walter Kimball acting secretary of Kiwanis International died of heart disease on Saturday at age 56. The Kiwanis leader served in a top national role and was active in international club affairs. The article notes his death occurred in Chicago on September 21.
