A new military government in Bucharest executes nine Nazi iron guards for the murder of Premier Armand Calinescu. Six assassins reenact the crime on the main street then are executed by firing squad before a public crowd. The event follows an official invitation to watch the reenactment.
A new 76 by 134 foot library and museum building rises on the Montana School of Mines campus with executive offices, a mezzanine, and a downstairs library. Built as a PWA project, it uses Montana travertine, steel and concrete, and opens for the fall semester soon.
F W Strandberg of Butte, president of the Silver Bow area council Boy Scouts of America, appeals for trained leadership and youth movement support. He says scouting aims to build character and citizenship through learning by doing and stresses the council’s responsibility to develop youth character and training. Continued on Page 8 Col 5.
A British government blue book publishes a 195 page record of German and British diplomacy during the last efforts to avert war. It cites Hitler’s alliance questions to Britain, Henderson’s cautious read of Nazi aims, and the failed bid to involve Beck and Ribbentrop.
Dr C E Emery age 45 a famed Butte physician died suddenly in Pasadena California yesterday from heat related causes. He and his wife had traveled by plane from Butte to Los Angeles due to a sick sister. The body will return to Butte Sunday and funeral plans await Mrs Emery arrival.
The forecast calls for partly cloudy weather across Montana on Friday and Saturday with cooler conditions expected east of the divide on Friday.
Co captains were chosen for the two teams to play in tomorrow's dinner golf match at the Butte Country Club course Montana. Joe Lewellyn and Joe Dunleavy will lead one group with Bob Calloway and Bill Dolan leading the rival team. The event, a team classic, includes after dinner speeches and potential extra play. Dr. C. E. Emery's sudden death affected attendance and planning for the event.

Paris Sept 21 Premier Daladier declared Hitler halted peace by appealing to the United States while Russia and Germany secretly agreed to partition Poland. He said Poland’s destruction was settled in advance and urged France to fight until complete victory as Western lines stiffen in German occupied territory.
Nazi organs claim England assassinated Romanian Premier Armand Calinescu. The report appears in the Deutscher Dienst and the Voelkischer Beobachter. Also, Justice Pierce Butler returns to Garfield Hospital after losing ground in recent days.
Ukrainian bands wield control in a settlement area at the base of the Carpathians as German and Soviet forces advance toward the Hungarian frontier. Reports describe day long clashes with Polish police and widespread looting and burning of villages. A Polish officer recounts fleeing east of Lwow and encountering a village sign proclaiming Heil Hitler and a Ukrainian Republic in the occupied zone.
At the Anaconda Copper Mining company offices it was announced that monthly employes in mining and metallurgical operations at Butte Anaconda and Great Falls will receive an $18.75 per month raise effective September 18 1939 The raise applies to those earning up to 350.00 per month excluding office elevator and messenger boys The increase aligns with the current 12 cent copper price and follows unions in the Building Construction Trades and Metal Trades of the AFL.
A large delegation from the Butte Chamber of Commerce will travel to Virginia City this afternoon to meet Madison Valley residents and push plans to develop and preserve historical sites for a major tourist draw. A dinner for the group is set for 6:30 p.m. at the Virginia City Vigilance Club, with members including Dr. Francis A. Thomson John Burke August Grunert A J Knievel Ray Ruhle and others.
School district officials appealed to community pride after vandalism damaged grounds around several schools. Washington school suffered the heaviest destruction with uprooted trees and destroyed patches of lawn. Police alerted and cooperation requested from residents to help catch the culprits.
