Demonstrations with chants like No capitulation filled the night as Czechoslovakia surrendered to UK and France demands, ceding the Sudetenland to Germany to avert invasion.
A massive coastal storm crashes from Moriches to East hampton, killing 127 with hundreds missing. Massachusetts Rhode Island Connecticut and New Hampshire report major deaths as powerful winds and tides flood cities from New Haven to Providence. Bridges collapse and fires threaten New London while 600 families are stranded near Brigantine Atlantic City.

Miss Alice Bassett of Philadelphia arrives in Butte to seek her missing father Ben Bassett believed to have lived in the city for years. The 22 year search began in 1916 when he disappeared from a South Dakota farm. Bassett, 66 on Sept 29, was in real estate and mining. his son Jimmy is about 19 or 20. Miss Bassett plans to continue the hunt and asks locals with information to contact The Montana Standard in Los Angeles.
A destructive gale in New London, Connecticut, sparked six or more fires burning for hours. Firemen and about 200 national guardsmen patrolled debris clogged streets as officials appealed to Washington for Red Cross aid. Fire crews steadily contained the blazes despite blocked access and uprooted trees.
Westhampton Beach on Long Island faces severe storm devastation with heavy loss of life feared. Coast Guard Commander William M. Wolff reports four women and two men washed ashore while hundreds are marooned and most homes destroyed or damaged. Rescue operations mobilized as seas flood area from Moriches to East Hampton.
A middle aged man shot and killed a woman and then killed himself in San Francisco. Police found the woman's body, about 40, in a lot and the man in an automobile nearby. Names were not released immediately.
The century old frigate Old Ironsides was damaged in a hurricane across New England. It tore from moorings and jammed against the dock as the storm swept the region this evening.

Five women drown near Pis cataquag river when a bridge collapsed in New Hampshire. Park City ferry sighted off Port Jefferson after four hours missing. New London base reports piers flooded four feet with damage to docks and several vessels.
In Montana a massive Butte open-air rally by Holy Name society members draws about ten thousand participants. The parade starts at the courthouse and ends at Butte High School stadium. Rev Norbert Hoff and Bishop Joseph Gilmore speak as lights go out and candles are lit. The event is open to the public with stadium seating near capacity.
