Treasury figures show the public debt fell under 37 billion dollars on September 18 for the first time since August 24, after the retirement of 350 million dollars of maturing discount bills. September tax collections reduced the deficit and officials expect further borrowing next month.
Montana conferees reported a virtual agreement with PWA and RFC officials to start the Tongue river irrigation project in eastern Montana. The plan will be written and submitted. ongoing conferences aim to expedite all Montana projects already funded by PWA.
Washington observers say the budget bureau may gain sweeping new powers over spending policies and Frank C. Walker, first director of the national emergency council, could be recalled to head the budget director post. One thousand rebel troops threatened to cross the border into France, and French guards rushed to the Pyrenees frontier after Troncoso called the arrest a declaration of war on nationalist Spain.
James Cummins 55 longtime telegraph editor of the Butte Daily Post was listed as unimproved at St. James hospital after an appendicitis operation Sunday. He has worked at the paper 25 years and lives at 1161 Diamond Street.
