Three maximum security inmates at Warm Springs State Hospital seized a hostage with a steel bar and fled in a gunmetal green 1966 Ford Mustang. Suspects Osier Hackley and Sather are sought by a nationwide manhunt in Montana as authorities describe the escape and hostage incident and release details about the convicts.
Montana educators warn that expanding two year vocational degrees may dilute benefits as funding rises. Amberson says six universities share growth, risking weak enrollments and a diluted impact on industry and students. Delegates fear competition for state funds will worsen two year programs across Vo Tech, university, community college and Employment Security divisions.

Billings Montana AP report says Mayor Willard Fraser a flamboyant Scot known for wit and bold politics was found dead in a Yellowstone Park hotel room while in Billings with Pat Nixon’s party. Fraser was Robert Frost’s son in law and was famed for sharp quotes about Montana politics.
In Belio Horizonte a judge ordered a parrot named Tzitzuzzi to leave the Goldstein apartment after neighbors complained the bird cheered for Atletico Mineiro and mimicked radio announcers. The Goldsteins contest the ruling, arguing their rights and denouncing the complaints as trivial.
In New Braunfels James Moos lost his wife and infant son in a flash flood. He placed his wedding ring on his wife’s grave before shooting himself with a rifle borrowed from a friend. Police later recovered the bodies of his wife Shirley and 21 month old Brian in the Landa Park area. Moos was buried near his wife and son in Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery.
A National Park Service biologist Glen Cole rejects charges that bear management policy will drive Yellowstone grizzlies to extinction. He cites a Park Service analysis claiming higher mortality and stable breeding, arguing the criticism is inaccurate.
Butte city council on Wednesday night approved seven appointments made by Mayor Mike Micone. Four appointments went to the Port of Butte board of directors with members including architect Walter Hinick and attorney Thomas Kiely. Burke, a former county planning board chair, was named a city representative to fill the unexpired term of Maxwell Botz. Dr Lee Mueske was reappointed to the unions, while Murray Lind was named to the zoning board to fill Pat Murray’s unexpired term as Murray transfers to Arizona. Butte Vo-tech asks county commissioners to set aside 35 to 40 acres east of the Civic Center for a 15 to 20 year development plan. Police traced the letters to Amsterdam as investigators search for the senders.
Madison County Sheriff Roy Kitson reports a fisherman is feared drowned in the Jefferson River. Search teams from Ennis Sheridan and Twin Bridges plus dogs worked Thursday after a Twin Bridges resident reported an abandoned boat and the missing man. A cave in along the river bank near Silver Star and Bridges led to the search zone where a lunch bucket was found downstream.
