A district court jury found Roy A. Brooks 61 guilty of second degree murder for the April 26 stabbing of Jesse Villaloves 45. Jurors sentenced later to 10 years and one day with no parole after a prior verdict was set aside.
Pasadena scientists monitor Surveyor 2 as it launches from Cape Kennedy at 8 32 am EDT on a 63 hour flight. The camera craft seeks a lunar landing site and follows Surveyor 1 which made a historic soft landing and extensive lunar photos in the Sea of Storms.
Wilbur Jacob Whitebull, 31, of Mahto South Dakota, died in a crash 22 miles east of Baker when his car failed to negotiate a curve on U S Highway 12. His wife Rosalyn, 17, was seriously injured and hospitalized in Baker. The incident raises this year’s traffic toll to 203, four more than last year.
Republican leader Charles H. Percy received a postmarked Chicago letter threatening him with a one way ride after his daughter Valerie was killed. Sen. Arrington said Percy sent him a copy of the May letter naming Arrington Nixon and Dirksen and signed The Boys. Continued on page 2.
Gov Tim Babcock announced he is returning to Sen Lee Metcalf the fair campaign pledge they signed two weeks earlier. He said Metcalf does not intend to abide by the terms of the pledge signed on Sept 6 by the two U S Senate candidates.
Izvestia condemns the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution as discrediting Marx and Lenin and accuses Beijing of waging a political struggle against the Soviet Union and other Communist states. The attack follows Red Guard violence and Shanghai incidents including the Sun Yat-sen widow’s home ransack.

Marine Lance Corporal Bruce B Backeberg 19, the first Helena serviceman killed in Viet Nam, died while in combat. His parents Mr and Mrs Lloyd D Backeberg were notified by Marine representatives, with his father hospitalized after the informing. He was born December 3 1948 in Great Falls and enlisted August 31 1964. Surviving include two sisters, Diane Roberts of Drummond and Darlene Withington of San Francisco, and brother Lloyd Jr. a Helena High student. The Montana toll in Viet Nam for the past two years stood at 26.
Ford Motor Co raised 1967 car prices by 52 to 347 dollars per model with flat averages around 25 dollars plus other improvements, despite President Johnson urging price restraint. The move, the first from the Big Four, could raise consumer spending by nearly a billion dollars if others follow, while 1967 model profits are projected to be lower than 1966.
U S Census Bureau reports Montana's population as 720000 as of last July, an increase of 14000 since 1965. California leads in population with 18918000, while Nevada and Arizona show rapid growth. Western migration drives gains overall, with U S total reaching about 195857000.
Former Livingston resident Thomas R. Gleason was appointed special assistant to the director of technical support at Kennedy Space Center. A retired Army lieutenant colonel and USMA graduate, he earned a master’s in electronics engineering and served 15 years in artillery before six years with the signal corps. His duties cover major launch operation phases including data tracking.
