Dr. Stanley J. Rogers said James Woody 48 of Billings was denied admission to Warm Springs State Hospital last Friday due to a threatened workers strike. Woody was found dead in his car Monday from carbon monoxide poisoning, ruled as death by his own actions, after authorities had been notified not to bring him in if possible.
President Nixon cut monthly draft calls to less than 10,000 for the next three months, the lowest in four years, by stretching October’s 29,000 and suspending November and December inductions. Melvin Laird framed the move as reducing inequities and aligning with troop withdrawals.
President Thieu said future American troop withdrawals from South Vietnam will depend mainly on Paris peace talks progress and battlefield activity, with past reductions based on South Vietnamese ability to take on more combat. He rejected any cease fire without guarantees and guarantees of a peaceful settlement.
Helena AP State Supreme Court takes up whether Montana counties may enter collective bargaining agreements covering all terms of employment including using sick leave as severance pay. The Civil Aeronautics Board began the Spokane Montana points service investigation to decide if Frontier Airlines should extend routes from Billings to Spokane via Bozeman and Missoula and via Great Falls and Missoula, and if Air West should extend to Missoula and Billings. Spokane would become a stronger Frontier terminal, enabling nonstop links to Billings Casper Cheyenne.

The virus hit Montana and the United States late last year and only sporadic cases are anticipated during the coming season. Snowball the year old cat belonging to Janie George daughter of Ft. Carson deputy post provost marshal traveled from Augusta Georgia to Colorado Springs in 28 days hidden in a bedspring during a move. After three days of searching movers overlooked the cat until the van arrived at Ft. Carson. The cat was thirsty and exhausted but expected to recover after veterinary care.
Democratic Leader Mike Mansfield told the Senate to remain in Washington and focus on business saying votes will occur with increasing frequency. He noted several senators will serve on vital delegations abroad and emphasized keeping troops here after Congress completed the first of the year’s 13 appropriations bills.
Helena reports fluoride pollution from Anaconda Aluminum Co in Columbia Falls is severe and exceeds state standards. State official Wake warns vegetation damage may be substantial, including ponderosa pine and Glacier National Park plant varieties. A plan for compliance and timing is sought by health and air pollution officials.
