The United Nations council urged a cease fire while Red China intensified troop buildup near India’s northern frontiers. India warned it would respond to the escalating border tension as the standoff deepened.
Christian Democrats held West Germany's No 1 party position as Ludwig Erhard won a strong nationwide election, with 47.6 percent of votes. Willy Brandt suffered a second straight national defeat, while the Free Democratic Party dropped to 9.5 percent.
The council approved a 10 to 0 vote with Jordan abstaining demanding a cease fire by 3 am EDT Wednesday and both sides withdraw to Aug 5 positions. It urges Thant to supervise the cease fire and explore political steps on Kashmir while urging restraint to prevent further hostilities.
Soviet scientist Dr. B Y Levin presented eight slides from Zond-3, transmitted last July 18, at a conference on the Moon and Planets in Pasadena. He noted craters two to 25 miles wide with possible meteorite impacts and said the backside is no longer an enigma. The spacecraft passed 5,000 to 7,000 miles from the lunar surface.
