Saigon reports China warns any new U S attack on North Vietnam will trigger strong response. The dispatch notes U S Navy fires on four unidentified vessels amid rising tensions and furor in the region.
North Viet Nam denied any of its warships were present when U S destroyers fired on four vessels in the Tonkin Gulf incident. Hanoi called the events grave and said no North Vietnamese battleship was in the area.
Democrats from Beaverhead Granite Powell Deer Lodge Jefferson and Silver Bow gather at Gregson Hot Springs for an old fashioned rally. National state and local candidates attend with free Montana prime beef barbecue served at noon. The Ma roon Band and Rev Howard Y Williams join welcoming remarks by Mayor Tom Powers and master of ceremonies Joe Shea.
R. Y. Amrine, division vice president of Prudential Federal Savings and Loan Association, will head the YMCA 1965 finance campaign. Keith P. Johnson, president of the Y board, announced the appointment. Amrine said the drive is needed to combat juvenile problems and to develop character in young people through Y programs.
The House of Delegates of the Montana Medical Association voted to endorse legislation to prevent air pollution and protect health in Montana. It reaffirmed Kerr-Mills health care support and urged its executive committee to propose the measure to the next legislature. The meeting also discussed Faulkner’s proposal for cross state medical school contracts in the West.
Montana Supreme Court Chief Justice James J. Harrison and Associate Justice Wesley Castles, long collaborative partners on the court, run for reelection. Harrison is unopposed while Castles faces Harold L. Allen of Three Forks. Both were appointed Jan 7, 1957 by Gov. Aronson.
Governor Tim Babcock proposes reenacting the cigarette tax on a biennial basis to fund a broad state building program. The plan would divert roughly 2.5 million dollars annually from bonuses to veterans toward construction as Montana faces 25 to 30 million dollars in new buildings over the next decade. The Montana Democratic Platform signals opposition to a three cent cigarette tax for state government.

A 17 year old, David Albrecht of Bloomfield, died when his motorcycle lost control on a gravel ridge near his home at 9 p.m. The vehicle vaulted and landed on the rider, deputies said. Montana’s traffic toll rose to 188 for the year.
Montana independent fire and casualty insurance agents begin their 33rd annual convention in Butte with a golf tournament trapshooting event an executive session and registration. Speakers are arriving from the Deep South East and West Coast.
The Montana Association of Independent Insurance Agents will conduct sessions Monday and Tuesday with a strong educational theme. President James E. Driscoll of Butte expects attendance to surpass previous annual conventions.
Two dark haired men aged between 25 and 30 broke into Mary Comasso’s Meaderville home on Harrison Street around 7 am Saturday. They threatened to kill her, took $25 from her savings, and fled. deputies conducted a neighborhood search but found no trace of the robbers.
In Butte the Most Rev E B Schuster auxiliary bishop of Great Falls, opened Montana Serra Club district sessions with emphasis on renewed lay participation in Christian leadership. Ignatius Morrison Seattle international trustee joined as principal speaker. over 150 Serra members and guests attended the two day event at Girls Central High School. Morrison called Serra the University of Christian Principle and spoke of Cardinal Stritch’s foresight in cultivating lay leaders. four Friday sessions covered religious leadership.
Freshman orientation at Montana School of Mines begins Wednesday with a convocation at 9 am in the Library-Museum Building. Students take placement tests, write an English theme, and meet advisers as part of a multi day pre-registration process led by Prof. W C Laity. Formal registration starts Monday, Sept 2, with classes beginning Tuesday, Sept 29 at 8 am.
The Clark Canyon Dam dedication will take place at noon for the $22 million East Beach Bureau of Reclamation project focused on irrigation flood control and recreation. Local officials plan a ceremony to mark the completion and official opening of the facility.
