Nazi leaders declare a long struggle as Hitler signals readiness to wage a seven year war if needed. German forces push on the western front while Nazis and Soviet Russia vow to restore law and order, framing Europe as great powers.
Gov. Ayers appoints Missoula District Judge Ralph L. Arnold associate justice to replace the late Samuel V. Stewart. Arnold will serve until the 1940 general election for the remainder of Stewart’s term ending January 1, 1945. He is Montana’s first Missoula native on the state high court and has a long public service record.
AP reports Danzig Hitler states seven year war readiness and eastern Europe stabilisation efforts. Britain calls Hitler speech misleading as trawlers sunk and ships damaged. Moscow notes Red Army in Wilno and front from Wilno to Lwow. Berlin claims 50,000 Polish prisoners and large booty. Gdynia fighting. Paris says northern flank hour. Danzig speech marks Hitler's acceptance into Greater Germany. He warns Britain and France of retaliatory strikes and outlines plans with Soviet Russia to enforce order in eastern Europe. He denies seeking Russia's Ukraine and asserts Poland's fate under Versailles will not return.
President Roosevelt announced he will speak to Congress at the special session in Washington on Thursday to officially open the neutrality law controversy. Senators Vandenberg and Holt oppose changing the statute now while Connally and Guffey plan support.

The admiralty announced a final survivor list for the torpedoed carrier Courageous. Approximately 682 sailors and 72 officers survived, leaving about 578 unaccounted for, comprising 560 seamen and 18 officers.
Agricultural Department leaders from five states gather in Billings for the second regional conference and school of philosophy sponsored by the federal government. Reports from the Polish frontier described a proposed partition of Poland creating a buffer state of about one third of Poland. A new government would sign peace with Germany and Russia, with eastern Poland to Russia and western territories to Germany. Soviet occupation continued across the frontier from Romania with little resistance.
Chosen student committees for the fourth annual Helena Diocese Catholic Action conference were announced by Rev. J A Rooney. Members come from Girls Central and Christian Brothers high schools. Over 1,200 students are expected for the two day event with sessions at the Knights of Columbus hall and Christian Brothers auditorium.
Moscow reports the Red Army seized Wilno the northeastern Polish city after a two hour battle. Volynski also fell as German troops near Lwow and Wilno stands as the most significant recent Soviet success.

The German initiative follows Poland victory on the eastern front, with a first major western front assault east of the Blies river, near Saarbruecken, Blieskastel, and Saarlouis region.
Britain and France refuse Hitler's peace overture calling his Danzig speech filled with misstatements. A government communique asserts Germany's western aims remain unchanged. Meanwhile sea warfare claims two trawlers sunk and 681 survivors among 1260 aboard.
The Butte high school Parent-Teacher Association decided at its first fall meeting to pursue free lunches for needy students. They cited federal resources under the public welfare department and noted many calls for such lunches. The group also plans a request to the city council for greater police protection at the stadium during football games amid fence damage at the Central Havre game.
