A prison escapee is shot dead in a gun battle as three Japanese armies breach Chinese defenses in the north. Strategy shifts call for breaking center as both sides deploy new formations to meet fresh units.
Shanghai reports indicate Japanese planes attack the city with heavy raids while 1,435 US Marines arrive aboard the transport Chaumont at Woosung. Tientsin dispatches outline Terauchi’s plan to break Chinese center along the Peiping Hankow railway and encircle forces east and west of it.
Washington reports the Roosevelt order barring arms and war gear from government ships to Japan or China remains unchanged. China protests, with Ambassador Wang meeting Secretary Hull and reiterating concerns that the policy harms China and aids Japan. The move forced the government-owned Wichita to unload war planes in an American port.
French premier Negrin and Foreign Minister Delbos warned the League of Nations that foreign intervention in Spain could trigger a European struggle with annihilation. Negrin blamed Italy and Germany for aggression and cited plans to send 150,000 more troops to support Franco. Delbos warned of a destabilized balance and a path toward total war and urged action to prevent the abyss.
Italian rejection of a new invitation to join the anti piracy patrol feeds a tense stand off in the Mediterranean. Reports say fresh Italian volunteers are being enrolled signaling a shift in foreign intervention in the Spanish civil war.
About 1500 students from eight Catholic high schools will gather in Butte for the Helena diocese second annual Students Catholic Action convention. Delegations include Catholic Central Anaconda St Marys Helena Cathedral Kalispell Academy of the Sacred Heart Missoula Holy Rosary Bozeman and the Butte hosts. Events take place at St Patrick s Fox theater K of C hall Irish Christian Brothers gym and Central Sisters convent.
Washington reports President George H Davis of the Chamber of Commerce says unemployment figures are inflated by nonworking groups and cites a sample survey of relief recipients in a large city. He argues that 5 million jobless is an overestimate and suggests about 2.5 million may be able to work.
In Poughkeepsie New York Franz Hanawald 26 is jailed awaiting a special grand jury session Tuesday on kidnapping charges for abducting 63 year old wine importer Julius Redlich and chaining him in a man made cave guards placed him under guard at county jail tonight
Senator Arthur H. Vandenberg urged a sympathetic coalition under Republican standards in a Sept 18 rally in Bay City Michigan. He attacked the Roosevelt administration on constitutional issues and warned that the Constitution survives only if Supreme Court appointees remain above reproach.
Republican forces pushed toward Gijon from the south as insurgents claimed control of the highway to the last Bay of Biscay seaport. Near Gijon, a second column neared Riba de Sella while government losses were listed at 400 killed in heavy fighting.
Mining city residents enjoyed a September sun day with temperatures rising from 37 to 83 degrees. Elder residents note the readings are unusually high for the start of fall. Partly cloudy skies are forecast for tomorrow with little temperature change expected.
Fire fighters battled a fresh forest blaze threatening Warren Idaho population 250 perched near several surrounding fires. The new fire blocked a southeast road and closed the only westward highway toward McCall forcing evacuation plans and raising danger to the meadow safety area. More than 120 men rushed from McCall assisted by 250 Civilian Conservation Corps enrollees in Glacier National Park fires.
Amalgamated Association of Street Electric Railway and Motor Coach Employes of America chose Cincinnati Ohio as the site for its 1939 convention after concluding sessions in San Francisco today.
Two Ram girls aged 11 were slightly injured when the truck they sat on the running board of a car near Park and Alabama streets rolled away and struck a car. They were treated at St James hospital by Dr L A Donnell and sent home. George Trevenna of Williamsburg reported parking the truck nearby while he entered a store.
Dr Harold E Anthony of the American Museum of Natural History seeks ammunition as he stalks big game atop Shiva Temple in Grand Canyon National Park. Park officials report indications of sizable animals at the summit and note archaeological findings like arrow heads and rock scrapers. Continued on page 12.
Fire crews battled a 400 acre forest blaze near Echo Lake, now in mop up status. About 255 firefighters remained at three main camps as authorities said the fire, possibly man caused, was smaller than first feared and did not threaten summer homes. Listed crews included forest service, Philipsburg volunteers, CCC teams, and workers from Anaconda and nearby camps. Fire danger remained high with lookouts posted and winds moderate.
Three Peters brothers mourn the death of J. H. Peters in Hazelton Idaho beer parlor violence. Jerome County Prosecutor Frank Rettig said voluntary manslaughter charges may be filed against Dave Detweiler, who allegedly struck Peters twice after Peters pleaded not to be hit again.
Ben Swartz an escaped Montana State Prison convict killed in a four hour siege at a shack in Orchard Homes Missoula officers aided by highway patrol and a federal agent used tear gas and gunfire after Swartz who had attacked a Missoula woman and escaped from Deer Lodge refused to surrender He died about 6 30 p m with a rifle in his hands and the fatal bullet undetermined.
Partly cloudy to cloudy conditions across Montana on Sunday and Monday with showers in the western areas Sunday night or Monday. Cooler temperatures expected on Monday.
Three Girl Scouts from Anaconda aged 12, 11, and 10 reported and extinguished 13 small fires started by youths on A hill north of the city. Joyce Stubblefield 12 Betty Summerville 11 and Ruth Wagner 10 alerted police and provided a description of one suspected boy.
County surveyor Jack Healy announced the 3.3 mile improvement west of the Divide road merged with the Silver Bow-Beaverhead counties bridge. The project widened a dangerous corduroy stretch and now handles about 500 cars daily with 2900 on Sundays, benefiting merchants, miners, fishermen, ranchers and tourists accessing the Big Hole basin and Idaho points. The Wise River Improvement Association promoted the work and coordinated with the state highway commission.
