Governor Smith travels through the grain belt to mount a campaign attack on Republicans and Herbert Hoover over farm relief. He says he supports the McNary Haugen bill’s core aim to control export surpluses with costs on the benefited commodity and accuses Hoover of opposing this principle.
Carl R. Gray president of the Union Pacific system says business conditions are good across the line and that the presidential year has not affected activity. He arrived in Butte for an inspection of the Oregon Short Line unit with C. G. Seger and a party including F. W. Robinson and J. L. Haugh. They were to lunch with Henry Coulam at the Silver Bow club.
Owen Sound Ontario September 18 planes combed Georgian Bay Lake Huron for survivors from the cattle ship Manasoo which sank during a storm. Five crew members were saved after two and a half days on a leaking raft. One dead and 17 believed lost. The vessel known as Ma cassa carried 46 head of cattle from West Bay Manitoulin Island to Owen Sound. Capt Donald Wallace led the cattle crew with George Lambert. A storm struck early Saturday, but the ship rode out until capsizing. Continued on Page 2 Column 2.
Negotiations for the sale of the Missoula Public Service holdings in western Montana to the American Power and Light company were announced by C. H. Christensen. The properties include water systems for Missoula and Hamilton, Bonner and Hamilton plants, Bitter Root valley transmission lines, the Missoula heating plant, and 25 miles of street railway. A formal announcement will come mid October.
The final report of trustee C E Meagher in the Heilbronner bankruptcy is submitted and approved. Appointed July 20 1925 he has closed the estate with assets converted to money and funds distributed per court order. The report, filed May 17 1928, shows all disbursements vouched and no adverse interests.
Ten year old Billy Ranieri who was abducted in Chicago nearly two weeks ago was found near Joliet and released by his captors. He suffered a bruise on his head but was unharmed otherwise. He was picked up at a filling station after wandering toward a street car line with ten dollars given by the abductors.
Mrs. French, mother of C. C. Skidmore, is held in Oakland with her son as police probe the disappearance and possible murder of James Bassett of Seattle. The pair, former Butte and Anaconda residents, were involved in prior cases including the disappearance of Mrs. Ernest LaCasse. Skidmore fights Seattle police extradition efforts announced yesterday.
A violent windstorm yesterday afternoon injured one man and damaged two airplanes on the south side of the city. Motorists halted, pedestrians' view vanished, and trees suffered numerous broken limbs uptown and downtown. Horace Dunn, a student pilot at Butte airport, was struck on the head while tying a plane to the ground.
Governor Alfred E. Smith will be welcomed in Billings by a Butte led delegation of democratic leaders and newspapermen for his one Montana address in Helena. The group includes U S Senators Walsh and Wheeler, Governor and Mrs Erickson, and numerous Montana figures.
Climaxing the largest registration in history the State School of Mines will begin classes this morning at 8 o'clock. Registration books closed yesterday with more names than last year though figures show increases in four year mining engineering metallurgy geology and decreases in special and unclassified students. Coach Charley McAuliffe will issue first call for the Ore Diggers football team this afternoon with initial practice on the School of Mines gridiron.
Federal officers Holter and Jones smashed two doors at the Brown Derby on 41% North Wyoming street and arrested Charles McKay on prohibition charges. A warrant on affidavit plan was served, and a cache of whisky gin and beer was seized. Jones suffered a leg injury from flying glass. two other arrests followed at 125 West Galena and 20 West Broadway.
John F. Cullerton was unanimously elected grand knight of the Butte Knights of Columbus for the third time at a meeting at the K of C hall. Officers elected include Don B. King and J. A. McEvilly. Plans were finalized for the annual fall festival set for October 25 to 31 with a festival committee meeting Friday night.
Seattle aviator George H. Storck, who began a solo around the world flight from England, arrived in Marseilles France after being listed as missing for more than two days. He landed a 30 horsepower seaplane on a pond near Mar. He reported good health and planned to await spare parts before continuing the journey.
Storm sweeps north along the Atlantic coast with high velocity winds and record rainfall. Howard W. Shelby, Palm Beach Red Cross chairman, estimates Sunday's hurricane will leave about 400 dead in Palm Beach County.
Senator Joe Robinson returning from the Palm Beach area said damage estimates range from 75 to 100 million dollars. He noted 3500 to 4000 people homeless in West Palm Beach and being housed in hotels schools and other public buildings that withstood the hurricane.
Fort Myers reports at least 150 dead in a 15 mile stretch near Bear Beach Ritta and Miami Locks with dozens of bodies seen in canals. Jacksonville lists known dead over 250 and expects higher totals as missing persons rise and Red Cross fears reach 400 in Palm Beach county. Damage runs into millions. Continued on Page 2.
In Milwaukee a first annual Air Mail Flower Show honored Butte roses grown by Man Power company gardens. Richard Brimacombe received a prize ribbon from Milwaukee postmaster Peter F Piasecki for an exhibit praised as arriving in good condition despite two separate air accidents en route from Idaho and Cheyenne.
With books open three days longer, Silver Bow County expects at least 1,000 more qualified voters to register for the November 6 election. The clerk’s office will stay open until 8:30 p m today and Thursday, closing at 5 p m Friday. Deputies will register voters at Vance's store in Melrose and at King's Hotel in Divide. 249 registered yesterday, bring total to nearly 24,000 with 148 new female registrants.
