Washington reports the draft rising to its highest level since the Korean War with the Defense Department requesting 36,450 draftees for the Army Navy and Marines in November marking the first Marine Corps call for draftees in 13 years.
The big late summer storm moved out of Montana leaving a few snow flurries and record cold. The Weather Bureau forecast slight warming Saturday but a cold night with temperatures below freezing. Western and southern Montana would see light flurries through Saturday. Thursday night set record low temperatures across much of the state.
Washington parking expert Bill Barr told Butte civic leaders that downtown woes stem from parking and urged concrete steps. He warned against meter feeders, endorsed tandem parking and signage, and proposed on street spaces, licensed options, ride and park programs, and parking area leases to spur downtown business.
Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri told Parliament India will fight if necessary against both China and Pakistan. He proposed a joint border investigation with Beijing, urged no pretext for attack, and sought U.N. and allied support while China rejected overtures and warned of consequences on the Sikkim-Tibet frontier.
Butte merchants select Mondays for late shopping with the first session on Monday Sept 27 extending to 9 p.m. The policy will continue on following Mondays. A Montana Standard-Butte Daily Post poll showed 695 votes for Mondays versus 612 for Friday and smaller totals for other days. Voters praised the move and merchants’ effort.

Trout Unlimited president Martin Bovey spoke at Finlen Hotel urging Montanans to protect wild trout streams from the Reichle Dam project on the Big Hole River. He described forming a national Montana-led opposition and reported distributing 8000 pamphlets with more reprints planned. He warned anglers to defend the fragile wildlife before losses become permanent.
Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey will speak in Great Falls on October 30. The event targets a banquet audience of 700 or more, with arrival around 5 p.m. and church services the following morning. This visit marks his first Montana trip since October 1964, when a change in plans redirected him to Glasgow. James Paul leads local arrangements for Cascade County Democratic Central Committee.
A severe Arctic storm dumped more than 19 inches of snow, marooning nearly 5,000 travelers in Rawlins, Wyoming. US 30 was blocked, rail lines derailed, and dozens of buses and travelers sought shelter as the Contintental Divide was blanketed in winter conditions for September.
A Pan American World Airways Boeing 707 crashed into Chance's Mountain near Plymouth Montserrat while diverting for an instrument approach to Antigua. All 30 aboard perished, including 21 passengers and 9 crew. Captain Hugh Henderson of Miami led the flight from Fort de France with stops at Antigua St. Croix and San Juan. Rescue teams found only a few intact bodies amid scattered wreckage.
In central Montana's Little Belt Mountains a Bozeman man and a Montana State University Library employee died in a light plane crash. Efforts to recover their bodies were blocked when a Malmstrom AFB helicopter could not locate the wreckage and a search plane found it after, leaving the helicopter unavailable. Judith Basin County planned to drop markers for Saturday recovery. Harold Heiser aged 46 and Beatrice Brooks were the deceased.
