Navy Air Force plan reserve cuts amid Korea Pueblo aftercare

The Navy will release about 600 reservists by November who were recalled after North Korea seized the Pueblo. The Air Force may release some of its 14 200 air guard and reserve members but says they are needed for now due to operational commitments. Army activated 20 000 guards and reserves earlier this year, with about half serving in Vietnam. Congress critic Richard Schweiker backs broader releases.

Peace formula rejected by New York teachers strike

A peace proposal to end the New York public school strike was rejected by the United Federation of Teachers led by Albert Shanker. Despite early concessions, the UFT demanded a four point settlement and kept 55,000 members out on strike as about 15,000 supporters gathered near City Hall.

Fortas probe blocked by silence and privilege claims

Senate Judiciary Committee faced a wall of silence as administration officials refused to testify and invoked Executive Privilege amid a Fortas inquiry. Subpoenas for Richard Goodwin and Daniel Yergin were unserved, while testimony on Fortas' alleged White House clearance and 1966 State of the Union contact remained incomplete. Senate rejects amendment weakening gun control bill

In a 46 to 31 vote the Senate refused an amendment that would have exempted shotgun shells rifle bullets and all .22 caliber ammunition from a ban on interstate shipments to private individuals. The decision marked a setback for the Judiciary Committee and a victory for stronger gun control advocates. A broader overhaul with firearm registration and owner licensing is planned for the next votes.

Wreck Kills Butte Man on Highway 91 in Jefferson County

James Patrick Babcock 24 died Monday at St James Community Hospital after a one car crash on Highway 91 15.2 miles north of Butte in Jefferson County. The vehicle driven by James Laurence 25 of Boulder left the road in a right hand curve and rolled onto its top. Laurence suffered minor injuries. a third passenger is unnamed.

Allied seize 12-tube rocket launcher in Saigon area

Allied forces recover a Chinese made 107 mm rocket launcher with 12 tubes near Sai gon after guiding by a captured North Vietnamese lieutenant. The weapon, dating from 1965, was buried under huts in a village 10 miles south of the capital.

Chrysler to raise prices on new cars in 1969 models

Chrysler Corp announces price increases due to higher labor and material costs. Average rise around 2.9 percent or $84 per car. AP calculates 172 1969 models at about $2,917.44 average, up $128.11 from 1968. Tax, dealer, shipping, and local taxes not included. It is the third consecutive year Chrysler starts its new model line first.

The U S Public Health Service publishes If You Must Smoke to urge reductions for non quitters. It notes 1.5 million quit yearly, lists five steps to cut tar and nicotine, and advises checking brand tar nicotine levels per the Federal Trade Commission.

Burglars Hit Osselle’s Store for 3500 Dollar Loot
