Congressional leaders move to provide about 1.5 billion dollars to cover costs of the first peacetime draft. President Roosevelt is expected to sign the Burke-Wadsworth bill soon after final congressional approval. Proclamations will set registration for roughly 16.5 million men aged 21 to 36.
London reports a night raid by German bombers interrupted by a growing string of anti aircraft fire. AP correspondent notes 37 explosions in a minute as bombs strike outer London districts and Buckingham Palace vicinity. RAF shots back in fierce air battles with losses and rescues amid raids over England and channel ports.
President Roosevelt will attend the funeral for Speaker William B. Bankhead in Jasper Alabama after a House ceremony. Sam Rayburn will be elevated to speakership and preside at the Capitol service. A special train will transport Bankhead’s body and 60 colleagues to Alabama as the House recesses for three days.
The body of 19 year old James W Woodard son of James E Woodard president of Metals Bank and Trust was recovered from Swan Lake where he drowned during a boating accident on August 7 Private funeral services will be held and the family asks no floral offerings The victim a Butte high school graduate planned to enter Cornell University this fall Another man 25 Wallace White of Hollywood survived with help from John Woodard and J H Venable Jr Deep sea diving teams aided the recovery effort
The Sunday Chronicle reports scientists in hidden government laboratories have developed an apparatus that halts the time bomb, allowing safe removal for dismantling. Only volunteers with exceptional calm under threat may approach these devices.
Three people were hospitalized after Sunday morning car accidents. In Elk Park a collision between W A Rouse of Basin and Matthew P Fagan of Butte injured Mrs Rouse and left two children with minor bruises. Fagan suffered a knee injury. A second crash at Montana and Front streets occurred about 10:30 am with details continued on page 3.
In Great Falls on September 15 the Montana Young Democratic clubs chose Hugh J. Lemire of Miles City as president after a 30 to 21 vote over George O'Brien Jr. of Butte. Lemire was declared elected by acclamation. Mrs. Louise Zunchich of Great Falls was named first vice president.
The Salvation Army held a diamond jubilee celebration praising the organization for guiding youth toward good paths and aiding the down on their luck. Speakers eulogized founders Booths and praised the Army’s broad humanitarian work.
The admiralty announced that two French cargo ships en route between France and Africa struck a minefield off Sardinia Friday and sank. Three soldiers aboard drowned. remaining crew and passengers were saved.
The Democratic platform adopted in Great Falls endorses Senator Wheeler and praises Governor Ayers and Senator Wheeler. It reaffirms party principles, reviews eight years of Democratic national and state control, and calls for strong national defense and liberal government. Wheeler is praised as a fearless leader.
Lawrence Tibbett, noted American singer, is forced to cancel his entire fall concert and opera tour on medical advice. Managers Evans and Salter said he cannot sing in the San Francisco or Chicago opera seasons and cannot appear at the Metropolitan Opera till after January. A May 15 to 20 spring date was suggested as a replacement.
Kansas City reports Wendell L. Willkie, after a doctor’s note on a strained throat, plans a 3 p.m. Coffeyville address titled The Failure of the New Deal Theory of Government. He tours Kansas City with Mrs Willkie and resumes a 7,200 mile campaign through the Middle and Far West.
An outdoor Catholic service at Columbia Gardens drew about 3000 attendees from various faiths. Bishop Joseph M. Gilmore led the mass with sermon by Bishop Vincent T. Ryan, who warned atheism erodes natural rights and fuels dictatorship. Holy Name societies organized, with Knights of Columbus and American Legion assisting.
Montana forecast shows generally fair weather today and Tuesday with little temperature change. West of the divide remains cooler while areas east of the divide warm slightly today.
D Archy McGleer, Canadian charge d affaires, said Japan apologized and pledged compensation for injuries to crewmen and damage to the Canadian liner Empress of Asia after it was struck Saturday by a practice bomb from a Japanese naval plane.
Dr Glenn Frank 53, chairman of the Republican program committee, was killed in an automobile accident in Greenleaf Wisconsin. His son Glenn Frank Jr 21, a reporter for the Wisconsin State Journal, was fatally injured. A third man was injured as Frank neared a Brown county Republican leaders meeting before Wisconsin primary voting.
Mr and Mrs C E Calvert of Butte Mont were seriously injured in a Wisconsin auto crash that also killed Mrs J H Calvert of Whitewater. Their son John 18 was not in the wreck. Mrs Calvert broken arm and Mr Calvert leg broken twice. The couple were taken to Mercy hospital Janesville. Funeral services for Mrs Calvert were planned in Whitewater.
