Justice Hugo L. Black of the Supreme Court is identified as a life member of the Ku Klux Klan. The Justice Department says he filed the required oaths between August 24 and 29 before sailing for Europe, and a combined oath before a Senate official satisfied all legal requirements. He is now drawing the associate justice salary.
A temporary restraining order bars enforcement of a compulsory vaccination ruling against School District No. 1 and the county health officials. Judge T. E. Downey and Dr. J. L. Mondloch set a hearing for Sept Saturday 25 to determine if the order should become permanent. Read by court attaches, it allows unvaccinated children to attend until the show cause hearing.
The Montana School of Mines registrar reports a record enrollment as applications flood in. Residence hall rooms are fully booked, forcing overflow students to seek private housing in Butte. Opening day is September 27 with many Montana students and several international entrants expected.

Dr. Joseph F. Cowperthwaite 64 pioneer Butte physician died yesterday morning at his family home 1103 West Broadway after years of declining health. Born December 26 1872 in Galva Iowa he studied at the University of Chicago and practiced in Butte since 1895 save a two year period in Wisdom. Funeral services Friday at 2 PM at the family residence with daily patient visits noted during his final illness.
Alfred E. Smith delivered a speech in New York that was billed as addressing Hugo L. Black and the Ku Klux Klan, but he made no mention of either topic.
