Paris dispatch reports Warsaw remains in grave danger as German forces encircle the city while Polish troops hold at the Vistula lines. Polish radio says both Warsaw and Lwow repelled Thursday attacks as German advances surge through Poland toward the southeast border.
German high command says it has completed a circle around Warsaw and cut Lublin and Lwow communications as Polish resistance holds around Lodz. French reports claim German retreat on the Western Front while Gdynia falls after a 13 day siege. Autumn rains slow the advance.
Balloting on acceptance of the Anaconda Copper Mining companys new contract offered Monday to day pay employes in Butte Anaconda and Great Falls started here last night by craft unions and will continue with voting in Anaconda tonight and in Great Falls Saturday. The contract calls for an immediate 75 cent per day raise based on 12 cent copper. About 8 percent of Butte craft members voted last night and the company will be notified Monday morning of the craft vote results in Butte Anaconda and Great Falls. Members of the Anaconda Mill and Smeltermen union met to hear a report from its negotiating committee with Pat McCarthy presiding. Thomas Murray of Anaconda chaired the meeting.
A federal jury in New Orleans found Seymour Weiss and four co defendants guilty of mail fraud. The verdict came at 9:25 p m after a brief deliberation. Co defendants include Monte E Hart J M Smith Louis Lesage and J Emory Adams. Judge Borah did not immediately announce sentences.
G Sidney Houston head of statistics and research at First Bank Stock Corp told Butte Rotary Club that any change in U S neutrality law shifts the nation toward involvement in the European war. He warned of government control and urged caution as Congress considers revisions amid rising tensions.
War and rain have tangibly boosted Montana stockmen since September 1. The Federal Agricultural Marketing service reports higher prices due to war and improved grass and stockwater from rains. Cattle and calves show strong gains, with market movement already starting as hay and winter feeds arrive.
The Butte Anti-Tuberculosis Society reported in August eighty TB cases examined, including 26 new and 54 revisits by former patients. The board, led by Dr. Curtis L. Wilson, reviewed 1,699 cases from the prior month, with 20 new adults and six new children and 42 adult revisits and 12 child revisits. Mantoux tests were given to six adults and 12 children, and X ray examinations to 36.
Col. Charles A. Lindbergh will discuss America and the European Wars in a national Mutual Broadcasting System program Friday night from 7:45 to 8 p.m. MST. An aerospace figure, Lindbergh will address current conflicts and America’s stance in a concise 15 minute talk.

Paris notes German retreat near Saarbrucken with prisoners taken as artillery redombs the front. London intensifies sea patrols halting Allied contraband to Germany while Britain warns of action if civilians are bombed. Windsor reports King George’s first appearance since abdication and Poles retreat under German pressure in Budapest as Warsaw braces for winter. Washington defends neutrality while expanding coastal patrols. Pravda claims Polish state cracking under military setbacks and minority tensions.
London hears rumors of Soviet participation in a Poland partition amid Russia’s mobilization of about four million and border movements. Pravda calls Poland’s defeat a pretext for redress of alleged wrongs to White Russians and Ukrainian minorities.
Poland rejected a German proposal for exchanging the remaining German minority in Poland for Poles living in Germany. The offer was presented to Poland via the Swedish legation in Berlin, and the government announced the decision tonight.
Bernard Baruch, adviser to presidents, warned that unpredictable acts by warring nations will decide whether the United States stays out of the European conflict. He stressed he spoke only for himself after a White House meeting with President Roosevelt and said if the U S enters the war no one will gain or profit as expected.
The United States declared it relinquishes none of its rights under international law despite neutrality policy. Secretary Hull stated the government reserves all rights of the United States and its nationals and will take practical measures if those rights are violated by belligerents. A sharp autumn chill brought snow hail rain and sun to Butte and surrounding areas. Temperatures ranged from 51 to 41 degrees with .14 inch precipitation by 5:30 PM and an additional .02 inch after. Bozeman led state rainfall with .36 inch while Miles City and Poplar posted highs of 75 and Lewistown fell to 40. Partly cloudy forecasts continued for Butte tomorrow.
Two German men were arrested at Cape Frio about 75 miles east of Rio de Janeiro on suspicion of drafting plans of the port and surrounding coast line, a report from Rio de Janeiro papers said.
The Polish ambassador to Britain Count Edward Raczynski delivered a note to the British Foreign Office urging more effective aid for Poland. He seeks aerial support as German forces besiege Warsaw. Britain has focused its wartime action on sea power and anti submarine warfare so far.
Deer Lodge hosts a two day Treasure State horse show with a pet parade at 11 15 Saturday morning September 15 followed by a farmers picnic at the city park. Exhibits include junior fair displays dairy products poultry and garden items. Racing starts at 1 30 on Saturday and Sunday with the high school band providing music. Residents of Deer Lodge and Powell County invite state residents to join the celebration.
Firefighting efforts in the Northern Rocky Mountain region included more than 250 miles of line built by Forest Service crews to contain 1,618 fires this season. A report relayed by Charles A. Joy notes a surge of 716 fires in the last 10 days of August, aided by 50 man caused blazes and 3,000 CCC enrollees and other workers with 654 fires kept under an acre.
