National Guard helicopters dropped tear gas into a prison cellblock at 9:46 as a 500-strong state trooper force acted under Rockefeller backed claim of constitutional authority. The confrontation occurred in a 55-acre facility's northeast block, with further troop movements reported.
In Attica New York during five days of negotiations inmates and hostages faced brutal end as 1000 state troopers stormed the facility. Thirty seven killed including 28 inmates and nine hostages in a riot that left a grim toll and a police war zone scene.
Washington unusually broad Senate coalition of Democrats and Republicans seeks to send the draft bill back to conference to delay its extension. Senator Gordon Allott says he may table or kill the House approved compromise, opposing a pay raise for lower enlisted. Senator Mansfield backs tabling and could offer it if needed. The White House continues to press Allott amid a likely close vote influenced by absent Democratic presidential hopefuls.
Butte aldermen moved Monday night to set up a flood plain district and related ordinance. Acting in committee of the whole they recommended introducing a resolution of intent at the next regular council meeting and noted two paths: city led zoning or state led with federal flood plain insurance benefits. Bruce McClendon cited State Water Resources Board input and outlined options with Army Corps or federal aid, including restricted future residential development and possible recreational uses.
Richard Blow 32 of 3345 Kennedy remains in Silver Bow General Hospital in fair condition after a Sunday night collision on Rowe Road. He underwent a five hour leg operation and may lose a leg due to head wounds and multiple cuts. Deputies Burke and Guay were not injured in the opposite vehicle. The accident is under investigation.

A woman among the gang and a roof lookout aided the escape amid chatter that 500 thousand pounds may be involved. Bank officials report hundreds of private safe deposit boxes in the basement vault. The caper ranks among Britain's boldest heists in years.
Philipburg Roger P. Baker 31 pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter in the July 25 shooting death of his wife Amelia. The charge was reduced from second degree murder after a motion by Granite County Attorney William F. Sheehan, who said the killing occurred in heat of passion after a sudden quarrel. Judge Side G. Stewart set September 25 at 10 a.m. for sentencing. Baker remains jailed. Attorneys Robert Boyd and John Radonich of Anaconda represent him.
Voters in Montana cast ballots from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. for six Democratic convention delegates in Silver Bow County. The field shows many teachers and educators among 29 Democrats seeking nomination, with potential impact on the con con delegation next year.
