Montana lawmakers urged to set annual pay at 7500
The Montana Citizens Committee on the Legislature recommended an annual salary of 7500 for every legislator with one dissenting vote. A 50 a day in-session option was rejected. The panel also proposed increasing mileage reimbursement to 9 cents per mile. The group plans to urge the 41st Legislature to enact annual compensation.

Bootleg suspect escapes detention in Montana case
The sheriff's office received a report that Richard Pileggi, 33, a federal prisoner, escaped from the Montana State Hospital at Warm Springs where he was held for psychiatric examination by order of U. S. Judge Murray. Pileggi pleaded innocent to three counts of violation of federal liquor statutes after a moonshine still was found 18 miles east of Livingston.

Fire damages Court House Grocery basement and store
A late night fire destroyed a large portion of the basement of the Court House Grocery and Market at 168-170 W. Granite, with smoke and water damage to the main floor. Firefighters confined the blaze to the basement after alarms at 1 02 a m. Investigators led by City Fire Marshal John Cavanaugh and Assistant State Fire Marshal Ron Brown will probe chopping noises and a boarded window possibly linked to the fire. Owners Mrs. R C Spangler and John Campbell estimate losses at 15 000 to 20 000 with some insurance, while employee Drew Kehoe received a knee cut. The blaze follows three other Midtown fires in August.
