Administration May Seek to Arm Ships
The S S Arkansas was struck by shell fragments during an air raid on Suez and added to the growing list of American ships lost or damaged at sea. A Cairo legation report said the 6 697 ton Arkansan was hit the night of September 11 while trading between U S ports and the Red Sea. The crew consisted of 38 with 36 Americans, one British and one Dutch. The damage appeared limited as a British Cairo note reported no shipping damage from the Axis raid. The Arkansan sailed from New York July 19, reached Port Sudan September 5, and left for Suez September 8, likely in port when attacked.
