Fascist papers foresee war as Europe faces a delicate moment. Rebel artillery renews a heavy barrage on the Talavera front as loyalists defend fortified positions. The Spanish civil war nears its third month with rebels holding a seeming edge amid vast casualties.
Harry Richman and Dick Merrill left Southport at 3 03 a m to resume their bid to be first to complete a round trip trans Atlantic flight. After a 1838 hour previous leg from New York they now aimed for a second crossing aboard the Lady Peace with an English crowd cheering as they taxied onto the runway.
A rock avalanche from Rogue mountain plunged into Loen lake at 5 30 am sweeping the town. Seventy three residents died and about 20 survivors were found. Bodal Nesdal and Loen were struck with only one home standing along Rogne mountain. A battered steamboat and numerous bodies were reported in the flood.
A fierce fire swept the Marcus Daly racing plant near Butte destroying the grandstand clubhouse and pari mutuel booths. The wind may have spared the paddock stables and a turnstile structure as flames jumped along the stands and to the judge's stand. Fire reached 250 feet high, drawing crowds and lighting the night sky as asphalt and timber structures burned in about twenty minutes.
Maine voters go to the polls amid a flood of political appeals as candidates Landes and Brann seek support. The "as Maine goes the Union" saying frames the race, with disputes over how predictive the Maine vote is of national sentiment in presidential campaigns.

Kermit Kvenvolden of Fertile Minn is hospitalized with a fractured skull and chest injuries. Gerald Felten of Fertile and James Hendricks of California were unhurt.
The Most Rev. Joseph M. Gilmore officiated the ground breaking for a new Immaculate Conception parish hall and recreational center in Helena. The 65 by 100 foot building will cost about $40,000, include athletics and social areas, and be set in a large surrounding playground. A parish procession marked the ceremony with Holy Name members, choir, altar boys, clergy, and sisters.
Montana forecast shows showers on Monday followed by partly cloudy skies on Tuesday with a rise in temperatures.
Bishop Joseph M. Gilmore of Helena delivered a forceful sermon from an improvised altar in Columbia Gardens during Butte’s second annual field mass. He warned about social decay, family disintegration, rising divorce, and dropping birthrates, urging a return to Gallilean principles.
Carl E. Dahlbeck, 25, of Lyndonville Vermont, died from burns after a heater stove exploded in a Purdue University shower room trapping six football players. Tom McGannon and Lowell Decker were among those injured with burns, while Pat Malas remained listed in uncertain condition.
Horace Bull, 16, of 1832 Phillips Street, died after plunging from the top of a 60 foot roller coaster at Columbia Gardens. He was taken to St. James hospital where he died after a 6 hour vigil. An autopsy showed multiple internal injuries including a punctured lung. A star athlete and former Emerson School student, Bull was known for swimming and CCC camp service, saving a fellow enrollee during a summer in Molese.
Magnus Johnson Swedish immigrant turned U S Congressman and Senator died early today in Litchfield Minnesota at age 64 he would have been 65 next Saturday Stricken with pneumonia August 23 he had been hospitalized from his Kimball home Family including his widow were at the bedside Johnson had lived in Meeker County after working as a Wisconsin lumberjack he later entered the Farmer Labor movement and co operatives service in both Minnesota houses before winning a U S Senate seat in 1923.
September 13 report says rains and light snow aided forest service crews in the Clearwater forest as they contained a blaze that had threatened extensive timber. The fire covered a 20 mile perimeter and more than 1,000 men fought it, with many workers now dismissed.
