President Portes Gil of Mexico was jeered by a mob of more than 106 communists in front of the Mexican consulate in New York. Police reserves dispersed the crowd after twenty speakers were jailed as cries of Down with American imperialism and Down with Portes Gil echoed through the demonstration.
Butte grade and parochial schools will enter 24 teams in a citywide juvenile football league, announced by B. J. Gunderson YMCA director of Athletics. Sixty? four girls will also enter 16 girls fieldball teams. Local officials report nearly all grade schools show intent to participate in city play.
United Press reports Lady Jack as luck’s emblem on Friday the 13th in New York. It highlights Lorn W. Malloy of Guaranty Trust who stole 10000, fled to England, then sent back a full draft profiting from horse bets. Malloy’s fortunes continue after meeting a mysterious stranger.
New York report says Bishop James Cannon Jr returned from Europe and told reporters at the dock that the liquor situation in New York has grown worse. He warned that foreign affairs and domestic issues combine to strain public order as he spoke on arrival.
In Los Angeles a 15 year old, William Newman, walked into pitch at the La Brea pits while pursuing a squirrel. He and two boys aged 14 and 15, Jack Shoeharr and Willard Marshall, slipped into the sticky surface while trying to rescue the first. Six men, including fireman G B Mansfield, fought for 45 minutes to pull them free and save the group.
Western Montana and Idaho brace for renewed wildfires as hot winds fuel dormant burns. A trainload of firefighters rushed to Big Creek east of St Maries where flames have spread over 1700 acres in the St Joe National Forest. In Oregon a fatal forest accident killed Alvin Peoples and J H McCubbins as a tree fell on fighters. three others injured.
Secretary of the interior Ray Lyman Wilbur and National Park Service Director Horace Albright arrived for a Yellowstone visit after a reception in Livingston. Wilbur predicted a cordial welcome for visitors while praising the reception.
Washington reports an accord with Great Britain paving a December five power naval conference with Japan France and Italy to discuss further armament cuts. Parity between the United States and Britain by 1936 is set, avoiding scrapping American ships and easing tensions among major navies.
In Los Angeles on September 13 a heated defense in the second degree murder trial of Mrs. Lois Pantages challenged the prosecution claim she was intoxicated when she allegedly drove into Juro Rokumoto, a Japanese man, on Sunset Boulevard June 16.
