The joint meeting of Knights of Pythias and Pythian Sisters opens at 9 am at the Eagles hall in Helena with Oscar A. Lindstrom presiding. Greetings by Major Jak Wine Jr Fred Knoo and Margaret Ledingham honored guests. Music by Harold Paulson and Lou Knox Jr.
Helena outlines bidding for a memorial to war dead in Memorial Park. Dr. T L Hawkins notes bids open soon with a general committee meeting to plan completion after bids are received. Monument by Mark Radcliffe features an electrically lighted fountain rotunda near the band shell. aims to finish by early next year with funds in the city treasurer’s office. Contributions include Marine Corps Band concert proceeds and a $100 donation from Helena 40 and 8.
Veterans of the 163rd Infantry accepted the Billings Regiment club as the state association and installed local officers into state posts during a weekend in Helena. Officers named include W. O. Benson president Walter Prey vice president Norman Clark secretary Ray Richardson treasurer and trustees George Rothart Kenneth Sires and Harold Sprattler. Benson announced the 1949 reunion will be in Helena and the convention ended Sunday with a luncheon.
A Helena research foundation plans free radioactivity tests on ore samples to aid Montana uranium exploration. The Holter Research Foundation of Helena will conduct tests without identifying the specific radioactive element. Instructions for sample shipment available from N J Holter. The federal government offers a $10,000 bounty for uranium ore discovery.
Fort Benton mourns Amos Mike Fulton 20 after a self inflicted gunshot wound at his home. Coroner D L McGinnis says Fulton shot himself in the heart with a rifle. Funeral services scheduled. no inquest.
Wildlife Association members meet at 8 o clock Monday night in the Montana Power company assembly room. Feature speakers include Bol Facey ney and Faye Coney from the slabs file and game department. Reports on forest service summer pack trips by Bob Rouse Frank Moran and Virgil Jones. Lou Hoffman reports on wild planting.
Montana Democratic nominee John W. Bonner told an old age pensioners meeting that the state’s aged are builders whose pension rights are by right not charity. He criticized Republicans for a “well oiled machine” guiding pensions and pledged to break it if elected, opposing Burke Clements and Barclay Craighead in their posts. Bonner planned a Monday campaign stop in Mineral County and travels planned to the north and west after Helena.
Tappahannock semi pro team faced a pitching crisis when star hurler stats failed. Eight year old Chick Fox replaced him and blanked Gloucester 4-0 over eight innings. Fox outpitched ex major leaguer Max Lanier, now with the Mexican league. Fans returned admission fees in gratitude.
Miami dispatch reports a hurricane speeding north northwest at 18 to 20 mph with 140 mph winds near the center. It was 249 miles south of Bermuda and 980 miles east of Titusville, Fla, expected to pass 109 miles west of Bermuda Monday morning.
The Women of the Moose executive committee met at Mrs. Walter Gaskett's home and arranged a bazaar and baked goods sale at the Deer Lodge drug store on October 2. Proceeds will go to the Mooseheart committee to aid the little girl the local chapter sponsors. Refreshments were served by Grace Jensen and Tilian Murcay.
Women of the Moose met in regular session at the Moose hall in Deer Lodge. A committee was appointed to draft new by laws for relief members while reports from the membership publicity child care hospital guild and ritual committees were read. A social hour followed with Ann Worgie winning the draw prize. hostesses were Pegy McKee Alta Greetan and Flora Plerec.
Opening activities begin with an executive committee gathering Friday at 2 PM at the club house in Deer Lodge. Regular department meetings are to reconvene as usual in October.
Twenty five hundred United States Air Force personnel arrived in Liverpool on Sunday aboard two Army transports. The group, mainly mechanics and engineers, will service the United States Superfortresses stationed in Britain and assist Army transport divisions in support of air operations over Berlin.

Funeral services for 69 year old John Reid are set for 2 p.m. Monday at the Masonic temple under Acacia lodge No 33 AF and AM. Rev George L Van Bockern of First Presbyterian will officiate. Burial will be in the family plot at But cemetery.
Tokyo reports Asahi said a storm struck Sasebo on Kyushu causing 72 deaths and 70 missing with heavy rains flooding the area. Other dispatches say 39 killed elsewhere in Nagasaki prefecture. The reinfall set a record at 18 churches in 24 hours. June 28, 1995.
Thieves raided a farm in Des Moines by week’s end, digging up and carrying away three pear trees and one apple tree still bearing fruit from John J. Swanson’s orchard. The incident was reported to police last Sunday.
Anaconda Sept 13 Friends in Anaconda and Montana learned with sorrow of the passing Sunday morning of Mrs. Frank Tucker 50 at her home in Alpine apartments after a lengthy illness. She was a leading Ardent golfer and held the state women’s golf championship five times. Born Gladys Martin April 11 1883 she spent her life in Anaconda where she promoted flower shows and alpine displays. She was a graduate of Anaconda high school active in women’s sports and married to Frank Tucker who runs Tucker Clothes Shop. She leaves her parents two brothers-in-law and sisters and many Montana relatives. The body is at P J Finnegan funeral home. Funeral Wednesday at 2 p m at the Martin Martin home with Rev George T Van Backern officiating burial in cemetery.
Funeral services for Mrs. Mery Ann Kinney 52 conducted at St Peter church with a solemn high mass. Burial in Mont Carmel cemetery follows service after a 9 o clock start from Finnegan chapel.
Six Army airmen died in a blazing AT-7 twin engine trainer crash near the New Orleans airport. The Ellington field team, Houston Texas, was identified by Navy liaison Lt. Comdr. John Farsons, who said radio contact indicated the pilot was lost with one engine out. The craft circled for about an hour in zero visibility before the second engine failed and the plane went to the ground.
